The 38-year-old passing wizard played his final match on Sunday when New York City FC lost in the Major League Soccer playoffs.

Italy legend Andrea Pirlo has announced his retirement from football after playing his last ever match for New York City.

The 38-year-old, who enjoyed a trophy-laden career at club and global level, took to social media on Monday to announce hanging up his boots.

As my time in NYCFC comes to an end, I would like to say a few words.

Not only [has] my adventure in NY comes to an end but my journey as a football player as well.

He was known by fellow Italian teammates as l'architetto (the Architect) and became a household name during his time at AC Milan, where he won two Serie A titles and two Champions Leagues in 10 years at the San Siro.

"He spoke with his feet", Marcello Lippi, Italy's coach at the 2006 World Cup, said on Monday.

TJ Dillashaw on Cody Garbrandt: 'He Doesn't Deserve a Rematch'
If Dillashaw is forced to fight within his division for his next fight, there is a clear No. 1 contender bout on the horizon. After having a takedown attempt shrugged off, Dillashaw wobbled "No Love" with a thunderous head kick.

"Thank you to the unbelievable supporters, thank you to the coaching staff and everybody that works behind the scenes, thank you to my team-mates".

"Last but not least, all the fans around the world that always showed me support".

Pirlo is leaving a huge legacy behind him and will remain remembered as one of the most elegant players in the history of this game.

Recently retired Roma captain Francesco Totti, another teammate from the 2006 Italy side, tweeted, "It was an honor to play with you and against you, a champion with enormous class".

Pirlo also thanked "every team that I had the honour to play for" and "every team-mate that I have been pleased to play alongside" during his 22-year career. "You will always be on my side and in my heart.", he added.

The former England worldwide wrote: "Andrea Pirlo has announced his retirement from football". He also led his former club AC Milan to two Serie A titles before moving to Juventus with whom he won yet another title.
