European Union executive takes Hungary to court over education, NGO laws, migration

The European Union on Thursday has chose to sue the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland after they failed to comply with the Union's migrant relocation measures despite having been warned several times.

Despite confirmation by the CJEU of the validity of the EU's refugee relocation scheme in a ruling on September 6, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland remain in breach of their legal obligations, according to the EC press release.

The Commission said in a statement that Budapest had not made required changes to bring these laws into line with European Union law.

The Commission has launched legal action against the three member states earlier this year, sending them a "Letter of Formal Notice" in June and a "Reasoned Opinion" in July.

Brussels warned Budapest in October that it would take the case to its top court if it did not take the necessary measures to comply.

The row also underscores a growing rift between western European states and newer, former Soviet-bloc states in the European Union over a series of issues from migration to democratic standards.

College Basketball: Washington Huskies vs. Kansas Jayhawks
The Huskies were never again threatened. "We figured it out in the second half and it got contagious". In truth, the Jayhawks had little trouble getting Vick open shots in the middle of the zone.

The European Commission says it is also taking Hungary and Poland to court for the same reason.

Hungary adopted a law in April that set new requirements for non-EU universities based in the country.

Hungary has introduced an education law that could shut the Soros-founded Central University in Budapest, which has always been seen as a hostile bastion of liberalism by Orban's rightwing government.

In June, Hungary approved a law aimed at forcing civil society groups receiving more than 24,000 euros ($26,000) annually in overseas funding to register as a "foreign-supported organisation", or face closure.

There are still a few thousand eligible applicants in Italy and Greece waiting to be relocated, Frans Timmermans, First Vice President of the Commission, disclosed Thursday at a press conference at the Commission headquarter.
