Chorus of condemnation grows over Trump 'shithole' slurs

President Donald Trump

The U.S. president is reported to have referred to "shithole countries" in Africa, questioned why the United States would take more people from Haiti, and expressed a preference for people from Norway while he was meeting with lawmakers in the White House on Thursday.

The president has apparently denied the reported comments, stating on Twitter that "the language used by me at the DACA meeting was tough, but this was not the language used".

President Nana Akufo-Addo tweeted an unflinching defense of the African continent - and of Haiti and El Salvador, countries also mentioned during a meeting Thursday between Trump and a bipartisan group of senators at the White House. Instead, the deputy press secretary issued a statement arguing, "Trump will always fight for the American people".

Trump denied the vulgar remarks the next morning via tweet and said, "I have a wonderful relationship with Haitians".

This is a developing story. Trump allegedly said after being presented with a proposal to restore protections for immigrants from the countries in question. "There is a serious need for dialogue between the US Administration and the African countries".

"We have to reform our immigration system, make it more diversified where people from Asia and Europe can come to this country and make it merit-based so if you have a skill you can benefit America", McDonough said.

Federal Agency Returns to Accepting Requests Under DACA
The move was not well received by many other Senate Republicans , who have not had a chance to review details of the proposal. The talks on DACA have become embroiled in negotiations on funding for the federal government, which expires on January 19.

Ben Marter, a spokesman for Durbin, did not provide details of the conversation but said the senator was "encouraged" by Trump's reaction.

Almost a year into Trump's presidency, members of Congress are still struggling to relate to the unorthodox Trump and his spontaneous, often crude remarks.

Durbin praised Graham for being willing to confront the president over remarks roundly criticized as crude or racist on Friday - a term used by Hillary Clinton. "Maybe, maybe not. Maybe we ought to talk it through and decide before we continue with our current immigration policy", Carlson said.

The AU Mission said the African Union, through its member states, values the strategic partnership with the United States. "America deserves better, and when I'm governor, I'll protect immigrant families and make IL a welcoming state for all".

"I don't think President Trump is a racist in the traditional sense as we know in this country", Farris, Jr. told the media outlet. Democratic Senator Dick Durbin of IL, who was present at the meeting, said the reports were accurate and that "shithole was the exact word used once not twice but repeatedly".
