DACA in limbo as Trump and lawmakers point fingers

Still battling over what President Donald Trump did - or didn't - say during a tense White House immigration meeting last week with lawmakers, Senators used a hearing with the Homeland Security Secretary on Tuesday to publicly appeal for compromise on DACA and a series of politically hard immigration issues, as one Republican urged the President to "close this deal". She said the Trump administration and congressional Republicans want "a security-immigration deal".

DACA is the acronym of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, a 2012 programme that gave foreigners who entered the USA as minors a legal permit to reside and work in the country, Xinhua reported.

Durbin and several other lawmakers had gone to the White House last Thursday to pitch an agreement they'd reached on immigration-granting the Dreamers a path to citizenship, allocating $2.7 billion for border security and tweaking a visa program open to applicants from countries with low immigration rates to the U.S. "No more Lotteries!" Trump said.

"I just think that anyone who comes here illegally shouldn't be here, and that bothers me", one resident told News 12. He also said he would prefer immigrants from countries like Norway instead.

Questioning Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, Graham voiced frustration at the "Tuesday Trump" and the "Thursday Trump" from last week, indicating that he believes more conservative Republicans had intervened to scuttle a bipartisan immigration compromise that had been worked out by a group of six Senators.

Congressional leaders plan to vote later this week on a month-long spending bill but the ongoing fight over immigration threatens to derail the plan days before the Friday deadline to prevent a government shutdown.

Hurricane relief socked Salvation Army campaign
The Quad Cities Salvation Army reported collecting about $650,000 of their $825,000 goal. "It was for a variety of reasons". Medlock says going into 2018, the Salvation Army will look to make adjustments where they are needed.

Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona, also a Republican, said senators from both parties support a proposed compromise on legislation that he has helped write. Seven of those Democrats face re-election in November in states Trump won - including West Virginia, North Dakota and Montana, which have small numbers of minority voters. Trump said past year that he's killing the program unless Congress sends him legislation by March to keep it. Republicans seek an increase in military spending; Democrats want a DACA deal and a matching increase in nondefense funding. Most Americans say the undocumented should be allowed to stay - 77 percent said so in a 2017 poll by Quinnipiac University - although there are deep disagreements about what conditions they should have to meet to win legal residency or citizenship.

"I'm telling you he did not use that word, George, " Perdue said, accusing Durbin of a "gross misrepresentation, " adding that "it's not the first time Senator Durbin has done it, and it is not productive to solving the problem we're having".

However, Republicans and Democrats have both said they either heard Trump say it, or heard directly from colleagues who did.

But that agreement was cast into doubt the same day when a firestorm erupted after reports surfaced that President Donald Trump, during a meeting with lawmakers over an immigration bill, asked why the U.S. was accepting immigrants from "s-thole countries" referring reportedly to immigrants from Africa. Dick Durbin, who was at the White House meeting, said Friday that the president "said these hate-filled things and he said them repeatedly".

Republican Senator David Perdue, who was at the same White House meeting and had said he did not recall whether Trump made the comment, was more explicit Sunday. "They are all talk and no action", Trump tweeted. He noted that when Democrats were in charge and they needed to pass short term funding bills or other policy proposals they favored they got no support from GOP members: "zero, zero".

The tweet came one day after the Trump administration, citing a recent court order, resumed processing young undocumented immigrants' applications to renew their protections under DACA.
