Apple faces more scrutiny over iPhone slowdowns in South Korea, Italy

To appease angry consumers, Apple announced it would replace iPhone batteries for $29 instead of the usual $79.

Apple has announced that it will invest and spend about $350 billion in the United States in the next five years creating some 20,000 jobs in the country.

Although users will be able to opt out, Cook said Apple doesn't recommend users do so. With the update, Cook said, "We're going to give people the visibility of the health of their battery so it's very, very transparent - this hasn't been done before".

Apple admitted in December that it slows down processing speeds for certain iPhone models, but claimed it only does so to prevent the device from shutting down due to battery capacity.

Already the largest USA taxpayer, Apple anticipates repatriation tax payments of approximately $38 billion as required by the recent changes to the tax law.

"We deeply apologize for anybody that thinks we had some other kind of motivation", Cook said.

The app (version 11.9.73 beta) is now available for download through APK Mirror or by joining the beta testing group. For now, disconnecting your Google products from the network or disabling cast functionality seems to fix the issue.

South Korea is just one of the countries where the practice of slowing down iPhones with old batteries has earned Apple special attention from governmental agencies or consumer rights groups - the list also includes Brazil, China, France, Italy, and the US.

The group is also reported to represent about 120 plaintiffs in a civil damage suit against Apple which was also filed earlier this month.

"For the sake of its loyal fans, Apple has to take responsibility over the slowing iPhones", the advocacy group's official Park Soon-jang told Reuters on Friday.

Apple has added that as part of its next update, expected in March, it will give users the option to turn off the feature that slows down the older handsets. The company said previously that past updates to older models like the iPhone 6 and 7 were supposed to "smooth out" any potential glitches from aging batteries.
