"We might lose a helicopter, but they'll pay the price for this".

The Islamic State group is being routed from its strongholds, and the rebels who seek to topple President Bashar al-Assad are down to a few remaining pockets of land.

It said it had killed 26 militants.

"Our security forces are engaging in a great fight".

The army said in different statements the Turkish forces were killed and injured in different locations in Afrin.

Ankara says the YPG is a "terrorist" offshoot of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has waged a three-decade insurgency inside Turkey and is blacklisted by Washington and the European Union. "This fighting is absolutely unacceptable".

Western powers have expressed alarm over the government's campaign against rebel-held Eastern Ghouta, where 400,000 people have been besieged since 2013.

Geneva: Syrian and Russian airstrikes in rebel-held areas have killed 230 civilians in the past week, in some of the conflict's worst violence that may also constitute war crimes, the top United Nations human rights official said on Saturday.

The local government in Afrin accused Turkey of creating a "humanitarian crisis" by killing at least 160 people and displacing tens of thousands since the start of its offensive.

Unconfirmed Turkish media reports had said that Turkey halted flights after Russia closed the airspace over Afrin after militants shot down a Russian Su-25 fighter jet in Idlib province on February 3.

Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency said F-16 jets resumed bombing Thursday night, striking the northwestern enclave's Mount Bafilun, the villages of Sheik Huruz and Kefer Jenne, and the regions of Sheran, Jinderes and Raju, among other targets. This would mark the first time the YPG have downed a Turkish aircraft in the Afrin offensive.

Since the war began in 2011, Syrian Kurdish fighters and their allies have set up three autonomous cantons in the north, including Afrin which borders Turkey.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan made the remarks during a telephone conversation, according to a Kremlin statement, Xinhua reported.
