S Africa's ANC party to hold meeting as pressure mounts on Zuma

South Africa's Cyril Ramaphosa lays the groundwork for his transition to power

CAPE TOWN, South Africa-The leader of South Africa's ruling African National Congress said on Sunday that a protracted battle over the potential resignation of President Jacob Zuma will be concluded Monday.

Mr Zuma, 75, faces a number of corruption charges after nine years in power.

The occasion of Ramaphosa's speech was heavy with symbolism because he spoke from the same balcony where Mandela spoke on February 11, 1990, after he was released from prison by the white minority government of the time.

"I don't understand why the ANC's new leadership has not removed Zuma already because that is long overdue", he said at the rally. "It is important that we manage the discussions now underway with care and goal, ensuring that we put the interests of South Africa first".

He has faced criticism for previously keeping a low profile on the issue for much of his time as Zuma's deputy, though supporters say he was biding his time and planned to engineer changes from within the government and ruling party.

Zuma had been due to officiate at a diplomatic awards ceremony in Cape Town on Saturday, according to his office, but that event has been postponed.

"Nelson Mandela represented the best version of ourselves as South Africans", SARB governor Lesetja Kganyago said.

Dr Groenewald says that Mr Cyril Ramaphosa, president of the ANC, is busy losing his power footing in the ANC and that he missed a golden opportunity when a meeting of the ANC's National Executive Committee (NEC) was cancelled this past Wednesday.

Ford was the last USA ambassador to Syria and now teaches at Yale University and is a fellow at the Middle East Institute. She says the goal is to allow humanitarian aid and medical care to flow to more than 700 civilians in eastern Ghouta.

"As the leadership of the ANC we are engaged in discussions around the transition ... and specifically the position of the president of the republic", Ramaphosa said.

Ziyanda Peter, a 33-year-old unemployed mother of four from Langa, is looking to Ramaphosa to rebuild the ANC and revive the hope that South Africans had for a better future when Mandela led the country.

He is also reportedly seeking legal protection for his family and other associates who have been involved in controversial deals.

He acknowledged the ANC was suffering "a period of difficulty, disunity and discord", and said he wanted to replace it with "a new beginning". "They need to close this thing early this week".

So, if he so wishes, Mr Zuma can carry on as president of South Africa even if the NEC asks him to step down.

In 2008, the party pushed out then-president Thabo Mbeki over allegations of abuse of power.

Under Zuma, the ANC won less than 54 percent of the vote in local elections in 2016.
