FBI, NSA Warn Americans against Buying Huawei Smartphones

US v China IP row intensifies as senators weigh

Now CNBC reports that United States security chiefs are recommending against buying Huawei phones but also ZTE phones.

According to a CNBC report, the heads of six intelligence agencies - including the CIA, FBI and NSA - told the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday that they wouldn't recommend US citizens to use products or services from China's Huawei or ZTE.

The comments were made during a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on Tuesday. Earlier this week, half a dozen top members of intelligence agencies, including the FBI, CIA and NSA reaffirmed surveillance concerns about the company and fellow Chinese smartphone maker ZTE.

The U.S. intelligence agencies aren't thrilled about the idea of U.S. citizens using phones from certain Chinese manufacturers.

German SPD to Back Merkel Coalition to Halt Slump, Left Says
The SPD is in a hard situation after its support fell to historically low levels after September's parliamentary elections. And members of the SPD could yet reject the coalition deal in a ballot whose results will be announced on 4 March.

Federal Bureau of Investigation director Chris Wray echoed those concerns during a hearing Tuesday, stating, "We're deeply concerned about the risks of allowing any company or entity that is beholden to foreign governments that don't share our values to gain positions of power inside our telecommunications networks". He added that this would provide "the capacity to maliciously modify or steal information".

A statement from the agencies leaders specifically called out Huawei and ZTE for posing a security risk for both USA public servants and state agencies. "And it provides the capacity to conduct undetected espionage". The company's recent attempt to partner with the country's leading telecom operator AT&T was called off last minute, and reports suggested it was a move prompted by U.S. lawmakers. The decision prompted Huawei's CEO Richard Yu to go off-script during a speech at CES, describing the move as a "big loss" for the company, but a bigger loss for consumers. Huawei reportedly got users to write fake reviews of the handset, just so it can sell more units.

That line of thinking though, which is shared seemingly by the entire USA intelligence community, has held Huawei-the second-largest smartphone manufacturer in the world behind Samsung-back from realizing true success in the lucrative US smartphone market through traditional means. The Huawei Mate 10 Pro was supposed to be the Chinese ... "You need to look long and hard at companies like this".
