Uber in United Kingdom safety drive as it battles to secure future

Uber is fighting to keep its licence in London

Uber is still operating in London while it appeals the decision, and a hearing is due to take place in late spring to determine its fate.

Taxi service Uber, battling to retain its licence to operate in the British capital, said on Friday it would introduce new safety features, including 24-hour telephone support for riders and drivers.

London's transport regulator revoked the ride-hailing app's licence to operate past year.

He claims that Uber now already enforces this policy in London and works closely with the Metropolitan Police.

"However, Uber does not routinely report incidents retrospectively to the police on behalf of others - we advise those involved to make a report themselves and then assist the police with any subsequent enquiries", Tom Elvidge, Uber's general manager in London said in a statement.

Reporting incidents to the police: The company said it will directly pass information about any serious incident to the police.

Transport for London (TfL) has published a new policy statement to ensure private hire and ride-sharing services remain safe, secure and convenient in the Capital.

The body can also be stiffer and an improved electrical power steering system is claimed to return more road feel to the driver. In addition to the petrol engines, two versions of the 1.6-litre diesel engine will be available, with 115 and 136PS.

Instead, a spokesperson said: "Over the last few years we've led the way with pioneering technology, such as Global Positioning System tracking of every trip, which raises standards and enhances safety".

Uber was chastened in September when it lost its licence to operate in London, with TfL blaming Uber's approach to reporting serious crime, its vetting of drivers, how it obtains medical certificates, and its alleged use of regulatory-dodging software Greyball in other cities.

"But we recognise we can use our technology to go even further in setting a higher standard for private hire and other transport options", he added.

Customers will also be given more access to driver information, including the licensing authority and private hire number of their driver. "This means passengers can more easily raise any issues with the driver's licensing authority as well as with Uber", the company wrote.

There will also be a new round-the-clock support line for both passengers and drivers to handle any issues around a journey.

Finally, Uber also said that it has also completed the rollout of a "driver hours feature" across the UK. "We're determined to change the way we do business, so we'll carry on listening and plan to make other improvements over the coming months", Mr Elvidge said.

So Uber says from next month drivers will only be able to use the app within the region where they are licensed as a private hire driver.
