Yahoo users can sue over data breaches

Yahoo users in the United States can sue the company over the former tech giant's massive, record-setting data breach.

Judge Koh previously dismissed an earlier attempt by Yahoo to have the lawsuit thrown out, after the company claimed that the hacks it suffered were the result of advanced tactics by attackers rather than a failure of the company's security protocols.

In a decision on Friday night, US District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose, California rejected a bid by Verizon Communications, which bought Yahoo's Internet business last June, to dismiss many claims, including for negligence and breach of contract.

The lawsuit accuses Yahoo and its owner Verizon, which bought the internet giant previous year, of failing to properly disclose details of the 2014 hack, which exposed users to identity theft and forced them to spend extra money and time securing their personal information.

Back in October 2017, Yahoo announced its 2013 security breach exposed all 3 billion of its users (See: Yahoo now says all 3 billion accounts breached in 2013 hack).

Iraq PM lifts flight ban to Kurdish region's airports
It was not immediately clear whether the region would continue to maintain its independent visa system. The move "aims to facilitate the travel of citizens" through the two airports, the statement said.

Koh's new ruling dismisses some claims, but allows the consumers to proceed with others, including that Yahoo fraudulently deceived consumers by concealing the data breaches.

While Yahoo initially reported one billion users were exposed by one hack and 500 million exposed by another, the company revised its figures a year ago and disclosed that three billion users in total were put at risk as a result of the hacks. Yahoo didn't disclose that breach until December of 2016. All in all, that's about three billion accounts. The breach likely compromised email addresses, names and passwords - but, in perhaps the only twist of good luck, probably not any sensitive financial information. That allowed them to create fraudulent cookies and manipulate results made in Yahoo's search engine. They alleged that Yahoo knew about security vulnerabilities back in 2012 and about a 2014 hack as it occurred.

The breaches exposed usernames and passwords used to login to Yahoo accounts to hackers.

The Canadian, Karim Baratov, pleaded guilty to identity theft and conspiracy charges in November, while the other three remain at large in Russia, Reuters reported.
