Haley on Syria Chemical Attack: 'Only a Monster Does This'
- Marvin Ford
In recent weeks, government forces have recaptured villages and towns in the eastern Ghouta suburbs of the capital. Douma was the last holdout.
Speaking in the White House Cabinet Room Monday, Trump vowed to find out who is responsible for the attack that reportedly killed at least 40 people. He accused the United States of creating "a big elephant of lies and deceit", saying these lies were a precursor to some sort of attack against Syria.
Numerous victims were foaming at the mouth. Children were among the dead.
Initially pointing the finger at Washington, state news agency SANA said the missiles had hit the T-4 airbase in central Syria. "We tried to save them, but a lot of them couldn't be treated because [rescue workers] couldn't reach them. They died in their homes". "If it's Russian Federation, if it's Syria, if it's Iran, if it's all of them together, we'll figure it out", Trump said.
"They were suffering from symptoms of dilated pupils, coughing up blood from their mouths". The Russian representative said that the United States is "misguided" in thinking it has friends, as their friends are those who can not say "no" to them.
Trump's homeland security adviser, Thomas Bossert, noted the timing of the suspected chemical attack - nearly a year to the day of the USA missile strikes.
After a deadly sarin gas attack on the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhun that killed scores of people in April previous year, Trump quickly ordered a retaliatory strike. He added: "Everybody's gonna pay a price".
Trump had earlier said that Syrian allies Russian Federation and Iran may also bear some responsibility for the alleged chemical attack on April 7 in the rebel-held town of Douma, near Damascus, in which at least 40 people were reportedly killed.
Russian Federation ultimately bears the blame for repeated chemical weapons attacks in Syria, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says.
The Syrian government, in a statement posted on the state-run news agency SANA, denied the allegations.
Human Rights Watch has documented dozens of chemical attacks by government forces since the Khan Sheikhoun attack. "The Syrian authorities and Russian troops will provide conditions to travel to the areas of the alleged incident for them to familiarize themselves with the situation", he said. Although the agency said it was likely "an American aggression", US officials said the USA had not launched airstrikes on Syria.
With negotiations dragging on, the Syrian government may have decided that it was time to force the issue.
An early-morning strike on a Syrian government air base in the country's centre killed 14 fighters, including Iranian forces allied to the regime, a monitoring group said on Monday.
Office Of Government Ethics Outlines Concerns About EPA's Scott Pruitt
President Donald Trump has so far defended Pruitt , who has been an ardent advocate of the administration's deregulation agenda. On Friday, reports circulated that a faction in the White House, including chief of staff John Kelly, want him gone.
Russian Federation said that 100 buses had arrived in the town to help start ferrying out some 8,000 fighters their family members. Some have already started to leave.
Russia's Defense Ministry said two Israeli aircraft targeted the T4 air base in Homs province, firing eight missiles.
Washington and Paris denied any involvement.
Israel has not commented, but a former commander of the Israeli Air Force has said it was nearly certainly Israel that carried out the strike.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the strike on the T-4 base was a unsafe development.
The preparations follow a pattern of evacuations around the capital and other major Syrian cities as the government reasserts its control after seven years of war.
Then, during the meeting with top military leaders, he said the weekend assault "will be met and it will be met forcefully". His desire to withdraw 2,000 U.S. troops - who are there ostensibly to ensure the defeat of the Islamic State - is opposed by the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Pentagon, the State Department and the intelligence community.
"This is about humanity, we are talking about humanity, it can't be allowed to happen". "The Israeli strikes are only reported to the United States, so the Israeli strikes have a greater impact, especially on the Iranian side".
The Kremlin said Putin discussed the "accusations against Damascus by a number of Western countries" with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and "stressed the unacceptability of provocation and speculation on this matter".
Putin sent troops into Syria in 2015 to protect its most strategically important military base in the Middle East and defend and prop up the teetering regime of Bashar al Assad - a long-time ally.
The new USA draft says the council "will thoroughly assess how to take action" on its conclusions, and reaffirms the council's previous decision to take action against violators under Chapter 7 of the U.N. Charter, which includes sanctions and can be enforced militarily.
Trump was set to get a briefing and have dinner with military leaders. "And I'm afraid I won't be able to come back".
