"We can not tolerate the normalisation of the use of chemical weapons", he said in a statement issued shortly after huge explosions were heard in Syria's capital early Saturday followed by the sound of airplanes overhead.

"It was retaliation, not an act of war", Macron said in justifying the operation a day before the French parliament was set to debate it.

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Sunday that he persuaded Trump to leave USA troops in Syria.

"This action was proportionate and targeted, it was not aimed at (Syrian President Bashar al) Assad's allies nor at the civilian population", Le Drian said in a televised statement.

"Ten days ago, President Trump was saying "the United States should withdraw from Syria".

'We convinced him it was necessary to stay, ' he added.

He said that in order to find a lasting solution in Syria, "we need to talk with Iran, Russia and Turkey".

Macron also offered to play the role of intermediary between the United States and Russian Federation, whose relationship has been on edge over the chemical weapons attack and amid allegations that Russian Federation tried to interfere in the U.S. 2016 presidential election.

The NATO alliance gave its full backing; NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the attack was about ensuring that chemical weapons can not be used with impunity.

He added that Paris would work with all countries and that there were no changes to Macron's planned trip to Russian Federation next month. "I am not saying that the attacks ... solved all problems but compared to the alternative to do nothing, this was the right thing to do".

Inspectors for the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) were due to go to Douma Sunday after arriving in Syria shortly after Saturday's strikes, and have yet to report on any findings.

"We support the fact that our U.S., United Kingdom and French allies took on responsibility in this way as permanent members of the U.N. Security Council".

The leader detailed the success of the mission that saw France, the United Kingdom and USA rain terror down on Syria.

"Our allies had evidence that chemical weapons had been used, and we had proof that these weapons could be attributed to the Syrian regime, which led us to conduct this intervention", Macron added.

A day after France joined the United States and Britain in launching aggression on Syria, Macron insisted the intervention was "legitimate" and urged worldwide powers to push for a diplomatic solution to the seven-year war.
