Russia: Britain staged fake chemical attack in Syria

The Security Council meets at United Nations headquarters Monday

Pierce said she wanted "to state categorically. that Britain has no involvement and would never have any involvement in the use of a chemical weapon". "Who gave them the right to attack?" That had led to feverish speculation on Russian television, and from some Russian politicians, that a US strike on Syria could quickly devolve into a nuclear standoff as risky as the Cuban missile crisis.

"Clearly, the Assad regime did not get the message a year ago", he said. These targets were chosen specifically, according to Dunford, to limit civilian and foreign casualties.

Meanwhile, the Defense Ministry in a statement said Russian military bases in Syria had not been affected by the joint strike.

The statement clearly was aimed at discouraging the West from more attacks on Syria that could endanger Assad's gains on the battlefield, where Russian support has helped him secure control of most strategic areas.

Some analysts have predicted that the Kremlin will not wish to engage in a military clash with the US, but that the ongoing tension with Syria could push the two sides toward a military confrontation. The UK RAF contributed four Royal Air Force Tornado GR4s that launched Storm Shadow missiles.

Saturday's calibrated response in Moscow to the USA airstrike against a key Middle Eastern ally illustrated in stark terms the Kremlin's balancing act as it pushes to expand its influence overseas but seeks to maintain control over how far tensions rise.

Dunford did confirm that Syrian anti-air weapons platforms were engaged, though there has yet to be word on whether or not Russian S-300 or S-400 systems were involved in the ballistic missile defense initiative.

None of the cruise missiles launched by the USA and its allies entered the zone of responsibility of the Russian air defenses, including the Tartus naval base and the Hmeymim airbase in Syria, the statement read.

Syria has reported intercepting and destroying 13 missiles, though it seems likely that, even if true, that offered little reprieve from the barrage of ballistic munitions levied by the three nations. "It is due to arrive in Damascus on April 14", TASS news agency quoted Lavrov as saying. Neither Mattis, nor Dunford, were willing to discuss Syrian or Russian resistance to the strikes.

US Preparing New Sanctions on Russian Federation over Syria, Haley Says
Tim Kaine, also appearing on " Face the Nation ", slammed the air strikes as illegal and reckless without approval from Congress. Haley later told CBS that sanctions would be announced, likely on Monday, against Russian companies supplying the Syrian regime.

The U.S. Treasury Department will announce fresh sanctions on Monday on Russian Federation related to its involvement in Syria's use of chemical weapons, U.S. United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley said on Sunday.

"And what's most important is no one contests that the use of chemical weapons can not be tolerated and must be deterred, " he said.

Lavrov did not offer any evidence, however, to back up his claim.

"A pre-designed scenario is being implemented", Russian Ambassador Anatoly Antonov said on Twitter.

At the meeting, the fifth in a week on chemical weapons in Syria, Russia and its supporters again clashed with the United States and its allies over a suspected poison gas attack on April 7 in the Damascus suburb of Douma.

Top military officials, including Defense Secretary James Mattis, warned Trump during an afternoon meeting Thursday that he risks escalating USA involvement in Syria if he goes forward with the type of aggressive bombing campaign he has pushed over the past week, according to U.S. and Western officials briefed on the conversation.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called the missile strikes an "act of aggression against a sovereign state" and said they were against the United Nations charter. In fact, he accused the US of having the most.

Ambassador Antonov said: "Insulting the President of Russian Federation is unacceptable and inadmissible".

The US president said Washington is prepared to "sustain" pressure on al-Assad until he ends what Trump called a criminal pattern of killing his own people with internationally banned chemical weapons.
