Tory immigration minister clueless about Windrush deportations

Windrush migrants

The UK's Home Secretary Amber Rudd has apologised to thousands of British residents who arrived from the Caribbean decades ago and are now being denied basic rights after being incorrectly identified as illegal immigrants.

Tighter immigration rules have affected a proportion of these people who are now being classified as illegal immigrants, meaning they have lost their right to work or to claim health care (The Guardian).

The British government last week refused a request from the high commissioners of 12 Caribbean nations for a dedicated meeting on this subject at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in London this week.

"I don't know the numbers, but what I am determined to do going forward is to say we will have no more of this". Often they did not formally apply for British citizenship or a passport.

"That's why I am setting up a new area in my department to ensure that we have a completely new approach to how their situation is regularised".

"She is aware that many people are unlikely to have documents that are over 40 years old and she is clear that no-one with the right to be here will be made to leave".

The PM's spokesman said the Home Office was expected to set out measures to support members of the Windrush generation in providing the documentation necessary to prove their right to live in the UK.

It was signed by 140 MPs including Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and Conservative MP Sarah Wollaston.

The descendants of Britain's first wave of immigrants from its Caribbean former colonies are facing losing jobs and even deportation despite living and working in the United Kingdom for decades in a controversy which threatens to overshadow a meeting of the leaders of the Commonwealth of Britain and its former colonial possessions.

A letter to the prime minister, co-ordinated by Labour's David Lammy, called for a "swift resolution of this growing crisis".

Lammy, chair of the Race and Community All Party Parliamentary Group, said: "It is a stain on our nation's conscience and the Prime Minister must act urgently to right this historic wrong. Those are the people we are working hard to help now".

Ms Rudd announced the creation of a new task force in the Home Office to speed up the regularisation of the immigration status of people who arrived in the United Kingdom as long ago as the 1940s.

"There have been some horrendous situations which as a minister have appalled me", the immigration minister told ITV News in response to a question about deportations. We will handle every case with sensitivity and will help people understand what is required and help them gather the information they need'.

Mr Hewitt, Barbados high commissioner, told the BBC: "I have held as a great honour the fact that I am the first London-born high commissioner for Barbados".

Ms Rudd said that fees for sorting out the paperwork of those affected would be waived so that they can have their status confirmed free of charge. These individuals have done nothing wrong and there is no basis upon which the Home Office can justify what they are doing. They are being shut out of the system. "Others have been deported".
