Asia stocks edge up on steady China GDP, earnings in focus

Asia stocks wavered on Tuesday after data showed both hot and cold patches in the Chinese economy, but losses were limited as investors turned their focus to corporate earnings from Syria.

France's CAC 40 inched up 0.1 percent to 5,319.17 in early trading, while Germany's DAX added 0.3 percent to 12,430.06. The world's second biggest economy was expected to have carried most of its strong momentum from past year into the first quarter of 2018, after growing 6.8 per cent in the fourth quarter.

The dollar was barely changed, with demand for safe-haven U.S. Treasuries ebbing as investor risk appetite improved in parts of the broader markets as investors took the view Western-led strikes on Syria were a one-off intervention.China's economy grew a welcome 6.8 percent in the first quarter of 2018 from a year earlier, official data showed on Tuesday, unchanged from the previous quarter. "This is encouraging", said Robert Subbaraman, chief economist for Asia excluding Japan at Nomura in Singapore.

Shanghai's index shed 0.35 percent and Japan's Nikkei was unchanged.

The big four banks also closed mixed, while energy stocks such as Woodside Petroleum, Oil Search and Origin Energy gained 1-2 percent after crude oil prices posted their largest weekly gain in nearly a year.

Aluminium hovered near seven-year highs reached the previous day after United States sanctions on Russian producer Rusal stirred supply concerns. Against the yen, the USA dollar edged down slightly to trade at 107.21 late in the afternoon session, after touching as high as 107.61 earlier in the session.

Aluminium on the London Metal Exchange was at Dollars 2,386 per tonne after surging 5 percent to USD 2,403 on Monday, its highest since September 2011.
