UK's May to face angry lawmakers over Syria airstrikes

Worldwide inspectors were to try on Monday to visit the site of a suspected gas attack which brought US-led missile strikes on Syria and heightened the diplomatic confrontation between the West and President Bashar al-Assad's main ally Russian Federation.

A fact-finding team from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) arrived in Syria on Saturday, the same day the US, UK and France carried out airstrikes against Syrian government targets in response to the April 7 attack in Douma.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's office said on Monday an "irresponsible" migration policy on the part of the European Union.

"There is broad-based global support for the action we have taken", she will say.

Prime Minister Theresa May is set to face restive British lawmakers Monday to justify her decision to launch airstrikes against Syria without a vote in Parliament.

She said it was morally and legally right to strike and "degrade Syria's chemical weapons activity" adding that the military action was not about "regime change".

Activists say the alleged chemical attack killed at least 40 people. The Syrian government and its ally Russian Federation have denied involvement in any such attack.

The inspectors were due to attempt to visit the Douma site.

The Syrian government regained full control of Douma on Saturday, following a surrender deal with the rebels who had controlled the town just east of Damascus.

The Group of Seven leading industrialized nations has issued a joint statement endorsing the USA -led air strikes in Syria. That's after Syrian and Russian authorities prevented them from going to the scene Monday.

"For we can not allow the use of chemical weapons to become normalised - either within Syria, on the streets of the United Kingdom or elsewhere".

And U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley indicated over the weekend that new economic sanctions will be announced Monday against Russian Federation for enabling President Bashar Assad's regime to continue to use chemical weapons.

Responding to Haley's remarks, Evgeny Serebrennikov, deputy head of a Russian parliamentary defence committee, said Moscow was ready for the penalties.

"They are hard for us, but will do more damage to the U.S. and Europe", RIA quoted Serebrennikov as saying.

"The objective of our actions tonight is to establish a strong deterrent against the production, spread and use of chemical weapons", US President Donald Trump said in a televised address.

The United States is vulnerable in northeastern Syria, where it has about 2,000 special forces deployed alongside the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a mixed Kurdish and Arab force fighting IS and seeking to stabilize the northeast of the country.

The Western leaders were also facing scrutiny at home over their actions.

She is also expected to ask the Speaker for permission to hold an emergency debate in Parliament on the issue of Syria.

But she will be questioned over why she broke with a convention to seek parliamentary approval for the action, a decision that she and her ministers say was driven by the need to act quickly.

As the Kremlin press office reports, the leaders exchanged views on the situation after the United States and its allies' missile strike in the Syrian territory.
