Senate to Vote on Repealing Changes to Net Neutrality Rules

Senate Democrats say they have the votes to formally disapprove of FCC's Internet policy that will take effect next month. Here supporters of net neutrality protest the decision to repeal the Obama-era rule

"From the GOP tax scam, to attacks on the Affordable Care Act, to rolling back fuel economy standards, and to net neutrality, the Trump administration has repeatedly ignored the needs of everyday American families", said Senator Markey.

Republican senators were hoping to avoid the vote, but Democrats are using a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution to force the full Senate to vote.

This wouldn't be the end of the effort's struggles, however, as it is unknown whether the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives will even vote on the issue or President Trump would impart his required signature on the matter. Susan Collins, a Republican from ME, to join their side. The resolution needs only a simple majority of Senators present to pass.

"Senator Hassan has been a strong advocate on this issue, and it is critical that the Senate votes in favor of restoring net neutrality".

Cleanup underway a day after powerful storms pound Northeast
But more rain is expected to fall in the comings days into already saturated soils and cause more flooding. Although the storms have passed, forecasters said the risk of flooding will continue into Wednesday.

The resolution, which was introduced by Sen. "A vote against this resolution will be a vote to protect large corporations and special interests, leaving the American public to pay the price", he said in a statement. "You are either for a free and open internet or you are not", said Senator Schatz, lead Democrat on the Senate Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation, and the Internet. However, he did so despite widespread support for the rules; a survey taken around the time of the FCC's December vote showed that an overwhelming majority of Americans supported keeping them in place, including most Republican voters. The White House has expressed its support for the FCC's move in December to repeal the net neutrality rules, and Trump has often touted his ability to roll back government regulations.

Announcing that Democrats would force a vote on the repeal of net neutrality, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY said in a statement, "Soon the American people will know which side their member of Congress is on: fighting for big corporations and ISPs or defending small business owners, entrepreneurs, middle-class families, and everyday consumers". They reportedly sought to address legal ambiguity caused by previous open internet regulations, which were struck down by courts. Pai has also argued the 2015 rules have stymied internet investment.

"Americans will still be able to access websites they want to visit, they will still be able to enjoy the services they want to enjoy".

"The outcome of this Senate vote will impact the fight for Internet freedom for years to come", Greer wrote in a statement. "This is the way things were prior to 2015, and how they will be once again".
