Local women part of landmark breast cancer research

The TAILORx trial study, presented on Sunday, June 3 at the American Society of Clinical Oncology conference in Chicago, discovered that "patients with smaller-sized tumors that had not spread to the lymph nodes did just as well without chemo as those who got the treatment".

Judy Perkins' prognosis was grim: The breast cancer had spread to her chest and liver.

The majority of women with the most common type of early-stage breast cancer can safely skip chemotherapy after surgery, according to a highly anticipated new report. "The study will help other women chose what treatment they want", says Kropp.

A high recurrence score, above 25, means chemo is advised to ward off a recurrence, while a low score, below 10, means it is not. The TAILORx study published last weekend showed that patients with a recurrence score of 11 to 25 may not benefit from chemotherapy along with an anti-estrogen medication.

The results suggest that these women can undergo hormone therapy alone instead of hormone therapy and chemotherapy?

Researchers studied their outcomes, including whether or not cancer recurred, and their overall survival.

Other experts said the results confirm what many patients and doctors are already doing. "We are de-escalating toxic therapy", study co-author Dr. Kathy Albain added.

She also reveals that she kept her pregnancy a secret from her gym instructor until the "riskier months" were over. It is believed that Pippa and James recently told close family and friends after the 12-week scan.

"The impact is tremendous", said the study leader, Dr. Joseph Sparano of Montefiore Medical Center in NY.

"We were surprised to see England had lower levels of breast cancer surgery and further research is needed to establish whether these two factors are linked". But in recent years, as many doctors concluded that women with early-stage cancer were being over-treated, they have reduced their use of chemotherapy, which can cause nausea, fatigue and, in rare cases, more serious complications such as leukemia and heart failure. The treatment involves the sequenced genome of the cancer in order to recognize and spot that which elements of the cancer cells may be "visible" to the patient's immune system. However, increasing cancer research funding, rising insurance coverage and increase in number of new targeted anti-cancer drugs supports the revenue growth of targeted cancer therapies market.

"I think this changes things", said Dr. Anne Blaes, an oncologist at University of Minnesota Health, and an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota's Medical School.

Steven Rosenberg, chief of surgery at the U.S. National Cancer Institute, says the key to cancer regressions as dramatic as Perkins' could be the focus on mutations specific to the patient.

Dr. Lisa Carey, a breast specialist at the University of North Carolina's Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, said she would be very comfortable advising patients to skip chemo if they were like those in the study who did not benefit from it.

The last of the therapy was injecting those cells back into the patient.
