Dixons Carphone finds data breach and over a million records accessed

Electronics retailer Dixons Carphone has suffered a massive data breach, with attackers accessing 5.9 million customer payment-card details and a further 1.2 million records containing personal information.

While the breach took place last July, Dixons Carphone only realised that it had occurred in the last week and the notification delay of nearly a year was not a case of the firm covering up the fact, allegedly.

Because the data breach dates back to previous year it will be dealt with by the ICO under the powers of the Data Protection Act 1998 and not the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which went into effect on May 25.

According to a statement made by the company, the security breach was discovered during a recent review of the company's systems and data.

Chief executive Alex Baldock admitted the group had "fallen short" of its responsibility to protect customer data.

The breach was now being investigated by police, it said, while regulators had also been informed.

As for the personal data records, they contained non-financial information including names, addresses, and email addresses.

It said there was now no evidence of any fraudulent use of the information - with the vast majority of the cards having chip and pin protection.

The company said in a statement: Our investigation is ongoing and now indicates that there was an attempt to compromise 5.9 million cards in one of the processing systems of Currys PC World and Dixons'.

However, an additional 105,000 cards from outside the European Union - with no chip-and-pin protection - have been compromised as part of the breach.

He said: "We are extremely disappointed and sorry for any upset this may cause".

Dixons Carphone said it had called in cyber experts and added extra security to its systems following the breach, while also since calling in the police and relevant authorities.

The National Cyber Security Centre has warned people to be mindful of potential fraud and follow-up campaigns.

Shares in Dixons Carphone dropped 4% in London.

The group added it did not believe the personal data accessed had left the group's systems, but was advising those affected on protective steps they should take.
