NCAA passes 4-game redshirt rule; what it means for Syracuse football

The NCAA has passed a rule that allows college football players to play up to four games without burning their redshirt. Under previous rules, any participation in a game meant that a player's redshirt year, which offers them an extra year of competition at some point down the road, was used up.

"This creates a safe place for student-athletes to have a conversation with their coaches and makes the whole process more transparent", former Coastal Carolina football player Nicholas Clark said in the NCAA statement.

Beyond this change, the Transfer Working Group is considering other transfer issues, including the processes surrounding postgraduate transfers. Instead, the NCAA is creating a database in which schools must input a transfer candidate's information within two business days of that player filing their transfer paperwork. The NCAA notes, however, that conferences can enact rules that are more restrictive than the national rule.

The Division I council adopted a proposal that prevent schools from blocking transfer requests from student-athletes.

"This change promotes not only fairness for college athletes, but also their health and well-being", said council chair Blake James, who is the athletic director at Miami.

The first, beginning October 15 student-athletes will be able to transfer and receive a scholarship without asking their current school for permission across all sports.

This is an interesting, and I think mostly good, change.

Berry was extremely optimistic about the proposal's chances following the AFCA Convention in January, was less positive in March and cautious in April, when the proposal was tabled over questions about timing, the number of games and potential application to other sports. "Coaches will appreciate the additional flexibility and ability to give younger players an opportunity to participate in limited competition".

According to news announced on Wednesday, players will no longer need permission from their school to transfer, and further, individual schools will no longer be able to block recruits from transferring to a certain school.

Before, playing one snap of Division I football would have claimed a season of eligibility.

The NCAA said legislation that governs when a Power Five school can reduce or cancel financial aid for an athlete may be looked at next week. Golfers, tennis players and other athletes in traditionally nonrevenue sports can transfer one time without sitting out.
