Net neutrality rules officially repealed in US

The Federal Communications Commission voted to repeal Net Neutrality in December. Telecoms are now free to block, slow, or otherwise discriminate against online content and services.

"By refusing to bring up the Senate-passed resolution to restore net neutrality, which passed the Senate by a powerful bipartisan vote, House Republican leaders gave a green light to the big ISPs to charge middle-class Americans, small business owners, schools, rural Americans, and communities of color more to use the internet", Schumer said, adding that the entire Senate Democratic Caucus had sent Ryan a letter urging him to move Doyle's bill forward. Continue reading to find out what changes today and what lies ahead for the charged issue.

Paid prioritization: Service providers could not create an internet fast lane for companies and consumers who paid premiums and a slow lane for those who didn't. It corresponds closely to the previous federal rule, barring ISPs from blocking or throttling the bandwidth on any legal content, service, app, or device, subject to reasonable network management.

"The Senate has voted to overturn the FCC order that killed off net neutrality", Doyle said. "Consumers want an open Internet. Americans in every state and across the political spectrum support rules that ban ISPs from blocking, throttling, and prioritising web traffic".

"I support a free and open internet", claims the FCC boss that just demolished rules protecting a free and open internet. In Montana and NY, governors signed executive orders that uphold the Obama-era net neutrality regulations. ISPs will be under the scanner of Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that will be able to investigate if internet providers engage in anti-competitive behavior.

Google Home can now handle up to three commands at once
Any combination of up to three queries can be spoked to Google Home, as long as the word "and" is used between the queries. But as promised at I/O, Home can now understand the more natural "turn on the lights in the living room and the kitchen".

Even though net neutrality is dead, don't expect to see immediate changes, said Evan Greer, deputy director of Fight for the Future, a digital rights advocacy group. More than 20 states have sued the FCC, and several governors have passed executive orders requiring ISPs doing business with their states to uphold net neutrality.

"June 11 is significant because it will be the first time in the over 15 year battle over net neutrality that the FCC will have essentially no role in preserving an open internet and overseeing the broadband market", said Gigi Sohn, a counselor to former FCC chairman Tom Wheeler. It may also make it harder for the next generation of online services to compete if they have to pay up to be placed in a so-called internet fast lane.

The FCC is nearly certain to challenge Washington as the agency asserted preemption, in which federal laws have precedent over state ones. Barbara Underwood, New York's attorney general, noted that lawsuits opposing the repeal were still pending. They're anxious the providers will charge consumers extra to reach particular sites and services in a speedy manner, either by directly billing them or by charging companies like Netflix, which could be expected to pass on the costs to their subscribers.

In 2015, the FCC stripped the FTC - the nation's premier consumer protection agency - of its authority over internet service providers.

Twenty-nine states have since introduced legislation, proposing reinstating some aspects of Net Neutrality.
