Scotland secure historic ODI win

Scotland pulled off a historic win on Sunday as they beat World No. 1 ODI team England for the first time at Grange ground in Edinburgh.

Morgan's side went into the one-off one-day global as the number one-ranked ODI side in the world, but suffered a shock defeat for the first time in their history to Scotland.

The Australians have shaped up well so far on their English tour, beginning with a couple of victories against Sussex and Middlesex in their warm up matches.

But Scotland's bowlers kept taking wickets and when pacer Safyaan Sharif had No 11 Mark Wood plumb lbw with seven balls to spare, England were 365 all out.

The disappointment is still very much there among the Scottish players, but MacLeod said the win over England will help put the team on the path to rebuilding.

They said the major event needed higher level of competitiveness and hence the teams ranked No. 9 and below will have to play the qualifiers.

Calum MacLeod's sublime, unbeaten 140 - together with strong contributions from Matthew Cross (48), skipper Kyle Coetzer (58) and George Munsey (55) - propelled Scotland to a mammoth total of 371-5, comfortably their best in ODIs.

Eoin Morgan has a formidable batting line up at his disposal.

Less than a year remains until England look to add a first piece of 50-over silverware to their trophy cabinet, with few better chances of ending their barren run than a tournament on home soil.

Australia captain Tim Paine says his players will shake hands with their England rivals before Wednesday's clash at The Oval as the tourists aim to heal the wounds of their recent ball-tampering scandal.

The International Cricket Council's decision to shrink the World Cup from 14 teams to 10 had already been heavily criticised long before Scotland and their fellow associate or non-Test nations impressed with the quality of their play in Zimbabwe.

"We were miles off where we expect to be and didn't do enough to win", he said.

The left-hander denied it was a reality check, but admitted they deserved to lose.

Former Durham and Warwickshire batsman MacLeod said Scotland's first worldwide cricket win over England was a "massive statement".
