Sweet young years: toddlers are getting too much added sugars, CDC reports

Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found that American children are consuming too much "added sugar" before they even reach their first birthday.

Now, according to the CDC, all these pediatric illnesses are triggered by a higher added sugar consumption than normal in toddlers across the U.S. and the experts recommend parent to avoid feeding their children with products that are known to contain added sugar, such as sweetened cereals, candies, sweet sodas, fruity yogurts, and so on.

But by the time children reached between 1 and 2 years old, nearly all of the sugar those children got was added. However, the scientists behind the study are now planning on analyzing the products with added sugar that kids usually consume.

Researchers found that many children under the age of 2 in the United States are eating more added sugar than the recommended amount for adults. The research titled "Consumption of added sugars among USA infants aged 6-23 months, 2011-2014" was presented at the American Society for Nutrition annual meeting in Boston on June 10.

In the survey, researchers instructed parents to write down what they fed their children in a 24-hour period. Other research has shown that both eating too much naturally occurring sugar and processed sugar can change receptors in the brain, increasing cravings for sweet foods.

From run-of-the-mill granulated white sugar to high fructose corn syrup, dietitian Dana Angelo White explained how "these sweeteners are a pure source of carbohydrate and have about 15 calories per teaspoon".

Herrick said the best way to cut sugar from the diets of children and adults is to "choose foods that you know don't have them, like fresh fruits and vegetables".

The results revealed that 85 percent of the toddlers and infants studied were consuming added sugars in their daily diet. For adult men, the limit is 9 teaspoons or less of added sugar per day. "These data may be relevant to the upcoming 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans". However, parents should always have the goal to give their children less added sugar, say the researchers of the study.

In the US, at least one in five children ages 6 to 19 years old is obese, according to the CDC.

According to both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association, children under the age of 2 shouldn't consume foods or drinks with added sugars at all.
