Trump continues to praise himself for North Korea summit

Former NBA player Dennis Rodman got emotional during a CNN interview from Singapore, where Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un are meeting for a summit on nuclear weapons.

The news on television and the front page of the ruling Workers' Party newspaper was something North Koreans never would have imagined just months ago - their leader Kim Jong Un warmly shaking hands with President Donald Trump.

North Korean state TV, for its part, hailed Kim for "opening a new chapter" in relations with the US.

The paper also reported that Mr. Kim and Mr. Trump "gladly accepted each other's invitation" to visit Pyongyang and Washington, respectively, in follow-up meetings from the denuclearization summit. Details of the document are not yet clear.

But in characteristically bullish tweets, Trump said everyone "can now feel much safer than the day I took office" and people could "sleep well tonight!"

Mr Trump, meanwhile, faced questions about whether he gave away too much in return for far too little when he bestowed a new legitimacy on Kim's rule and agreed, at Pyongyang's request, to end war games with Seoul that the allies had long portrayed as crucial to Asian safety. "Thank you to Chairman Kim, our day together was historic!"

Trump's Tuesday meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un produced a wave of United States concessions in exchange for vague, nonbinding promises from North Korea.

North Korean state media lauded the summit as a resounding success, highlighting concessions made by the USA president.

"The sanctions right now remain", he added.

Despite all the uncertainty and scepticism following the summit, the change of tone between Washington and Pyongyang is astonishing.

The spectacle was a major coup for an isolated and heavily sanctioned regime that has long craved worldwide legitimacy.

In earlier tweets, Trump called his meeting with Kim "an interesting and very positive experience".

"I think over the weeks that they spent with us, they gained greater confidence that we are sort of no-nonsense but efficient people", he said.

"In coordination with our ROK (Republic of Korea) partners, we will continue with our current military posture until we receive updated guidance from the Department of Defence (DoD) and/or Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM)".

Without drills, the United States forces in South Korea will wither, and if peace talks continue, the very rationale for them will erode as well.

He said about half of the cost is for security.

Pompeo also sought to counter concerns that North Korea and the USA came away from the talks with fundamentally different interpretations. -South Korea joint missile drill aimed to counter North Korea's intercontinental ballistic missile test in East Coast, South Korea, July 5, 2017. "The only possible path is one of direct dialogue".

North Korea has long objected to the drills as a security threat. "The president said he mentioned human rights so [there is no need to have] major concerns", Scarlatoiu said. "But the substance needs to be followed up", Akira Kawasaki, from the ICAN anti-nuclear group.
