Trump gaslights the American public about North Korea’s nuclear weapons

Rather than a game-changer, this was more of a breakthrough in how the US and North Korea talk to each other. On Wednesday morning, he took to Twitter to claim there was "no longer" a nuclear threat posed by the North Korean regime. US defense analysts have said Kim retains as many as 60 nuclear bombs and a range of missiles, including some he says can strike the U.S. His country with its Stalinist-era police state and centrally planned economy had a per-capita GDP rank of 214 out of 228 countries in the world before the U.S., China and most of the rest of the world imposed their latest round of sanctions.

After almost five hours of unprecedented talks between Trump and Kim on Tuesday, the two leaders signed a document in which Kim "reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula" and the USA agreed to "provide security guarantees". "I don't know exactly what form that will take, but I'm very confident that by some time in the next week or so we will begin the engagement".

North Korea is believed to possess more than 50 nuclear warheads, with its atomic program spread across more than 100 sites constructed over decades to evade worldwide inspections. "No longer - sleep well tonight!" the President wrote.

Trump agreed to end joint U.S. The words came back to haunt the administration, as the war dragged on throughout Bush's presidency.

North Korea could begin giving up its weapons today if it wanted to, but it instead has insisted on staging performances of denuclearization rather than on inviting worldwide inspectors to verify its progress. "That will take a while".

Kim Kyong Sun, who watched the news on a large screen outside Pyongyang's main train station, said she felt a "radical change" was underway in her country's relationship with the United States, which she said has been a hostile nation.

Tuesday's summit in Singapore was front page news on Wednesday, with full-page spreads of photos of Mr Kim and Mr Trump and details about the meeting.

Yet he immediately faced pointed questions at home about whether he got little and gave away much in his push to make a deal with the young autocrat - including an agreement to halt USA military exercises with South Korea.

Trump also said he hopes the thaw in relations with North Korea will eventually allow him to withdraw USA troops from the peninsula.

Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., said Tuesday that he wants Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to brief senators on the substance of what the two nations discussed, including whether US troops stationed on the Korean Peninsula would remain.

The Republican chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Bob Corker, said it was hard to assess what had happened at the summit.

"From now on, I think there will be more chances for [the U.S.] to bring up human rights".

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrived at Osan Air Base south of Seoul from Singapore early Wednesday evening. Mr Pompeo, the former Central Intelligence Agency director, then plans to fly to Beijing to update the Chinese government on the talks.

Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera said Japan saw "US-South Korean joint exercises and the US military presence in South Korea as vital to security in East Asia".

He said many in the media were hoping that the talks would "blow up" and that Kim Jong would "humiliate and embarrass Trump". Its inspectors have not returned to North Korea since they were expelled from the country in 2009. The next scheduled major exercise, involving tens of thousands of troops, normally is held in August.

KCNA also mentioned the end of U.S.
