United Kingdom justice minister resigns over Brexit ahead of key votes

The Lib Dems, who identify strongly as an anti-Brexit party to the point of pushing for a second referendum and running by-elections in Remain-friendly seats on that platform, opposed the Government.

But the resignation by Phillip Lee, who has always been critical of the government's Brexit strategy, underlined the deep rifts in the party over Brexit that makes such votes anything but easy.

She has previously spoken of the threats she faced for challenging the government, and revealed that one colleague would not be voting as they wished this week for fear of reprisals.

The text needs to honor her pledge to pro-EU Tories that she'll take account of their concerns over the possibility of leaving the bloc without a deal.

The issue seen as most likely to provoke a rebellion was that of giving MPs a "meaningful vote" on the final Brexit deal.

Brexit Secretary David Davis warned Conservative rebels that they should not use this week's votes to try to "reverse the decision of the referendum".

The upshot of the shift may well be as dramatic as the parliamentary procedure is incomprehensible.

The government's eleventh hour amendment, lifted in large parts from Tory Remainer Dominic Grieve's own proposal and to be presented to the Lords on Monday, is expected to give MPs the right to veto the government's strategy if it fails to secure a political agreement with the European Union by 30 November.

The legislation is now back before the House of Commons after a total of 15 defeats by the House of Lords.

"They are going to work with us to put together an amendment package so when the bill goes to the Lords it will satisfy us and I have the confidence that we will come to an agreed position". That clause - drafted by Grieve - basically hands a lot of power to Parliament if no deal has been agreed by the end of November.

Neymar scores as Brazil thrash Austria in pre World Cup friendly
Today, Brazil ace Coutinho - who secured a stunning £142m move to Barcelona back in January - is celebrating his 26th birthday. The first scare came in the third minute following a late tackle from behind by midfielder Alessandro Schoepf.

The victory was Pyrrhic, as the government's earlier climbdown all but ensures MPs will have an increased say on the terms of any deal.

Some MPs wanted a meaningful vote to give Parliament a real say - and vote - over the final Brexit deal negotiated by the United Kingdom and the European Union, rather than just accepting whatever is presented by the Government.

"Anything that undermines the government at home will make negotiations with the European Union more hard", May told a meeting of her cabinet.

"We have not, and will not, agree to the House of Commons binding the government's hands in the negotiations".

This assurance was enough to convince Tory rebels to vote with the government.

Brexiteers were dejected by the turn of events, but are pinning their immediate hopes on the detail in the government's compromise.

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May returns to Downing Street from the Houses of Parliament in London, Britain, June 12, 2018. But a government official said they had just agreed to open talks on the basis of the rebel amendment. Yes, it's a significant compromise but we live to fight another day. If she fails to deliver on her promises, she will lose their goodwill and face a backlash she won't be able to contain, people familiar with the matter said.

Keir Starmer, Labour's shadow Brexit secretary, was refusing to accept the government at its word Tuesday.

"However, facing the prospect of a humiliating defeat Theresa May has been forced to enter negotiations with her backbenchers and offer a so-called concession".

"I've been through this before when in opposition and now that when we're in Government, because if the House makes the concession of allowing the dialogue to continue and I can see the merit of that happening, it has got to be done in good faith".
