United States, Mexico & Canada Bid Wins Vote For 2026 World Cup

The joint bid won 134 votes (67%) out of the 203 entitled to vote with Morocco bagging 65 (33%) when voting took place in Moscow on Wednesday, a day ahead of the Russia World Cup 2018.

Under Trump, relations between the United States, Canada and Mexico have plumbed new lows thanks to disputes in the renegotiation of the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement, known as NAFTA, a $1.1 trillion trade pact that ties the three countries' economies together and which Trump has said should be scrapped.

In an agreement announced when the bid launched a year ago, the United States will stage 60 of the 80 matches, including all from the quarterfinals on, while Mexico and Canada will get 10 apiece.

That suggests that North American bid leaders' promises to deliver a record $11 billion profit for the 2026 tournament are feasible. After the vote, Trump Tweeted his congratulations about the win.

The North American bid had been the favorite.

The FIFA inspectors had deemed Morocco a "high risk" choice, describing the two bids as "almost at opposite ends of the spectrum".

The 2026 World Cup is to be the first to feature 48 teams, compared to the 32 that are to compete in Russian Federation and Qatar. But for those in charge of organizing the tournament, the work is only just beginning.

Federal Reserve expected to boost key interest rate
Previously, the statement made separate references to survey-based and market-based measures of such expectations. Fed drops reference from previous statements that it expected rates to be below neutral rate for "some time".

The vote subsequently went for what was viewed as the safer option, passing over Moroccan arguments that the Cup could serve as an economic and sporting engine for Africa.

The World Cup is coming back to America in 2026.

Denver is among the cities included in the USA bid, but there's no word yet on which cities will hold the matches. Most importantly flowing from that, of course, is a munificence of dollars promised from the tournament for Federation Internationale de Football Association, and therefore for the voting countries.

Fifa's president, Gianni Infantino, looked opportunistically quick to immediately put himself forward for re-election next year, and he was followed by United States president Donald Trump with a self-congratulatory tweet. "This is a reward for our unwavering belief and commitment to the growth of soccer, and we will continue to make major strides over the next eight years to ensure that we stage an unforgettable World Cup". "The merits of the bid, we feel we have a compelling proposal".

Morocco was counting on the strong support of African countries but it seems the ten nations defied the continental solidarity and voted otherwise.

It's unclear at the moment how travel will shake out and how far teams will have to travel for matches.

A total of 23 finalists between the three countries have been selected as possible locations for World Cup games. The 2026 World Cup will be the fourth men's World Cup hosted in North America, with Mexico hosting it in 1970 and 1986 and the United States previously hosting it in 1994.

After the summit, Trump attacked Trudeau as "dishonest" and "weak." and accused him of making false statements around the tariffs. The United States and Canada did not qualify.
