White House aide apologises for 'special place in hell' comment

Canada looks to ride out Trump trade storm

The president's surrogates also piled on during Sunday U.S. news shows, with Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro saying there was "a special place in hell" for Trudeau.

He said in a press conference that it was his mistake that he used such a language as he wanted to send an important message to the G7 members.

US President Donald Trump said the recent G7 spat-dominated meeting in Canada was "good", but in the same breath warned the host country would pay for the comments of its prime minister. The move has been roundly criticized by Canada and the European Union, leading to heightened tensions at last week's summit of the Group of Seven wealthy democracies - just before Trump left for Singapore and a meeting with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

Donald Trump says Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau has "learned" a lesson after criticising him, and it will cost Canada "a lot of money".

In return, Trump accused Trudeau of being "weak and dishonest" and instructed USA representatives not to endorse the G7 joint communique.

"I see (on) the television that he's giving a news conference about how he will not be pushed around by the United States".

An angry Trump refused to sign a joint statement issued at the end of the summit, and he and his top aides assailed Trudeau, accusing him of dishonesty and betrayal.

But Trudeau's Office said in a statement that the Canadian prime minister has been consistent with Trump both in public and private conversations.

Canada retaliated when the US imposed duties on imported steel and aluminum last month and would likely do the same on auto tariffs, Dias said.

A few strong storms possible (again) in Alabama Tuesday
Some of these storms are likely to be strong to severe with high winds, very large hail, and even an isolated tornado as threats. Beyond Wednesday , rain chances become minimal as high temperatures creep back into the 90s for the second half of the week.

"If Kim shakes Trump's hand and receives lavish praise from President Trump and tries to play President Trump - look what happened to Canada - bad things are going to happen", said Graham, the hawkish South Carolina Republican.

Navarro said he had been trying to use strong words to back Mr. Trump's trade stance but went too far. He learned. You can't do that.

In the same set of tweets, Trump said: "Justin acts hurt when called out!" There was no immediate response to the apology from Trudeau.

One particular source of his ire recently has been Canada's supply management system, which levels tariffs of up to 300 per cent on imported dairy products.

After leaving the meeting early, Trump tweeted that he was pulling USA support from a joint statement and he accused Trudeau of being weak and dishonest during a news conference.

Canada, she said, is still seeking a "win-win-win" NAFTA deal, while adding that Ottawa will remain "absolutely resolute in defense of the national interest".

"Sometimes when we think about tariffs, when we think about a trade war, we lose sight of the real impact, and that's on workers", Singh told a news conference.

If the US imposes a 25 per cent tariff on those exports, suddenly they don't make much economic sense, said Kristin Dziczek, vice president of industry, labour and economics at the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Mich.
