White House aide apologises over ‘special place in hell’ for Trudeau comment

US President Donald Trump's trade adviser Peter Navarro has apologised for having said there was "a special place in hell" for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Canada's prime minister earned Trump's ire by giving a press conference, after the USA president left La Malbaie, in which he spoke critically of USA trade policy and said Canada would "move forward with retaliatory measures" in response to Trump's move to impose tariffs on aluminum and steel.

President Trump responded with a tweet calling Trudeau "very dishonest and weak" and followed up by saying the United States would not endorse the G7 communique, a document signed by the seven leaders underlining their commitment to free and open trade.

- Dan O'Donoghue (@MrDanDonoghue) June 11, 2018The moment of levity comes amid increased trade tensions between the USA and Canada.

Not all USA officials have joined Messrs. We just shook hands.

"I'm not sure what activity he's asking me to undertake with either", May said amid laughter.

In an interview with ABC News' George Stephanopoulos which aired Tuesday, immediately following the president's meeting in Singapore with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, Trump appeared to take a softer tone toward Trudeau, admitting he likes him, but suggesting he wants to punish him for his remarks. "They don't take our farm products", Trump complained at the news conference Tuesday.

Several of Sporting's players are protesting about de Carvalho's behaviour, with some even accusing him of "psychological violence".

Mr Trump was furious after Mr Trudeau had said at the end of a contentious economic summit in Quebec that he wouldn't let Canada be pushed around in trade relations with the United States.

The Canadian Prime Minister initially said Trump's claims that Canadian steel posed a national security threat were dishonest.

"And that's what bad faith Justin Trudeau did with that stunt press conference", he added Sunday, noting his comments came "right from Air Force One".

Trudeau had simply reiterated Canada's stated plan of imposing retaliatory dollar-for-dollar tariffs in response to the new American tariffs on imported steel and aluminum.

Mr Trump revoked his administration's support for the G-7 communique after Mr Trudeau's news conference. We have a very big trade deficit with Canada.

Former Conservative cabinet minister James Moore, a member of the government's advisory group on NAFTA, hailed Trudeau's approach, refusing to react to "the noise, the bluster, the Twitter, the emotional outbursts". "The wounds will heal, but the question [is] how does the relationship get impacted?"

"Sometimes when we think about tariffs, when we think about a trade war, we lose sight of the real impact, and that's on workers", Singh told a news conference on Parliament Hill.
