New York Blood Center declares a 'Blood Emergency'

A new American Red Cross survey shows that widespread misconceptions about blood donation could be contributing to a shrinking blood donor population.

"Imagine life without the letters A, B and O, let alone Scrabble", said Silungile Mlambo, the SANBS's chief marketing officer.

"Every two seconds someone in the US needs blood".

"When your child is sick the last thing you want them to have is not be able to get the medicine that they need, and that's how we have to look at blood", said Theresa Blank.

Donors with the blood types B Negative and O Negative are especially encouraged to donate.

Lily Dotson and her family know how serious blood shortages can be for patients.

Many events are held around the world on June 14 to mark World Blood Donor Day.

The app now allows donors to book appointments, access maps of all the blood drives across the country and share via personal social media platforms, and as one of the coolest features yet, it sends a special notification to Whole Blood donors when their blood has been used to help save a life - in real time.

The Irish Blood Transfusion Service has called on the public to donate blood this summer as these months can be some of the most challenging for the service.

The SANBS has asked local brands, sports teams, corporates and landmarks to tweak their logos and donate their As, Bs and Os for just a week.

"Across New Zealand, there are 110,000 active donors, all of whom save the lives of almost 29,000 people around the country every year".

The Red Cross appreciates the support of its 18 lead partners who have joined the #MissingType campaign, including: Adobe, Anheuser-Busch, AvalonBay Communities, Inc., Domino's, Dropbox, Google, IBM, Land O'Lakes, Inc., Mastercard, Nationwide, Neiman Marcus, the New York Yankees, Oreo, PayPal, Salesforce, State Farm®, Sunoco and U.S. Bank.

Those who donate at a One Blood drive can receive a free $10 grocery store or Walmart gift card and a free wellness checkup, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, iron count and cholesterol screening. When blood products aren't available in emergency situations or those undergoing lifesaving treatments, patients like Jacqueline Rogers do notice.

Canadian Blood Services manages the national supply of blood, blood products and stem cells, and related services for all the provinces and territories (excluding Quebec).

The campaign aims to highlight stories of people whose lives have been saved through blood donation as a way of motivating regular blood donors to continue giving blood and to motivate people who have never given blood to begin doing so, particularly young people. Safe blood donations play a vital role in providing effective and prompt care for patients in need. In her message to commemorate World Blood Donor Day which falls on 14 June 2018, under the theme: Be there for someone else.
