Donald Trump says North Korea no longer a nuclear threat: ‘sleep well!’

President Trump meets with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Sentosa Island in Singapore.

The meeting between the two world leaders in Singapore culminated in an agreement that commits the U.S.to offering unspecified "security guarantees" for North Korea in exchange for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. It's possible North Korean officials will seek a firm commitment from the South on stopping its military drills with the United States.

The Republican chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Bob Corker, said it was hard to assess what had happened at the summit.

"The United States is our ally, so the joint military drills are still necessary to maintain our relationship with the US", said Lee Jae Sung, from Incheon.

Ordinary North Koreans consistently voice unequivocal support for the leadership when speaking to foreign media.

"The coming few months will give us a better indication as to whether [this] was an expensive photo opportunity or a positive breakthrough", said Patrick Cronin, the top Asia security expert at the Center for New American Security in Washington.

USA officials said it was unclear what types of training involving US and South Korean troops might cross into Trump's now forbidden zone of "war games". No longer - sleep well tonight!'

The summit, the first between a sitting USA president and a North Korean leader, was in stark contrast to a flurry of North Korean nuclear and missile tests and angry exchanges of insults between Mr Trump and Mr Kim a year ago that fuelled worries about war.

Donald Trump says North Korea no longer a nuclear threat: ‘sleep well!’

South Korean army's K-9 self-propelled howitzers take positions during an annual exercise in Paju, near the border with North Korea, South Korea, June 11, 2018.

"For now, there still is a need to find out the exact meaning and intention of President Trump's remarks", a spokesman for South Korea's presidential office said, reacting to the surprise announcement.

In North Korea, the official KCNA news agency described the summit as an "epoch-making meeting" that would help foster "a radical switchover in the most hostile (North Korea)-US relations".

Despite Trump's optimism after his summit with Kim, many remained skeptical that North Korea, infamous on the world stage for making empty promises, especially when it comes to its nuclear program, would follow through on its pledges from this week's meetings. "North Korea is no longer a nuclear threat, the president says, Kim Jong-Un is trustworthy, & "our country's biggest enemy" is journalists".

But others said it's a great step forward for peace.

"Let me assure you that "complete" encompasses verifiable in the minds of everyone concerned", Pompeo said.

"I looked at the document and I said, 'Is this for real?'" he said. Trump cast the decision as a cost-saving measure, but also called the exercises "inappropriate" while talks continue. "But I think we understand each other". He said he planned to continue sharing the view with Washington and Seoul. The next scheduled major exercise, involving tens of thousands of troops, normally is held in August.

During his talk with Hannity, Trump said his inflammatory rhetoric helped spur this new meeting.
