Senate will not 'poke the bear' Trump by passing tariff measure: lawmaker

Senator David Perdue (R-GA) called out his colleagues on the Senate floor, insisting President Trump be given the room he needs to negotiate trade deals that are in the best interest for American workers and consumers. Corker did not hide his frustration.

President Trump used the national security exception in levying 25 percent tariffs on steel and 10 percent on aluminum, causing Canada to angrily highlight how the two countries had fought shoulder-to-shoulder and the USA was now calling its northern neighbor a national security risk.

Corker also told reporters that he is planning to bring Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in next week for a hearing on the results of President Trump's summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

America First: "To those who say this President is only picking winners and losers, let me say this: the only victor President Trump is picking is America".

Corker's amendment would provide a congressional review process for certain executive branch trade actions taken for national security reasons, such as those taken by Trump with respect to steel and aluminum.

Cohen likely to cooperate with federal prosecutors
While Cohen has not been charged with a crime, he is the subject of an investigation by federal prosecutors of alleged wire fraud and other crimes.

Yet under pressure from the White House, senators had been unwilling to sign on to Corker's bill. Referencing Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, the No. 2 Senate Republican, Corker said, "I heard the senator from Texas, the senior senator from Texas, saying the other day, 'Well, gosh, we might upset the president". Corker said he asked for unanimous consent to place the current NDAA text on a House-passed revenue shell. James Inhofe, R-Okla., who is managing the defense bill and offered the objection.

Corker and other lawmakers - Democrats as well as some of Trump's fellow Republicans - introduced the measure last week after the president's recent announcement that he was considering tariffs on automobiles, after imposing tariffs on steel and aluminum, citing national security concerns.

"But no, the United States Senate right now, on June the 12th, is becoming a body where, well, we'll do what we can do but, my gosh, if the president gets upset with us then we might not be in the majority". Mitch McConnell being Majority Leader with a Republican president, there has been only one amendment vote.

Corker said such procedures are "used as customarily as waking up in the morning and drinking a cup of coffee", he said.

Corker, who leads the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, concluded by essentially conceding defeat. "They want to put it on that because they know it is going to pass".
