White House adviser: Trudeau remarks ‘betrayal’

National flags of the United States Canada and Mexico fly in the breeze in New Orleans recently. The North American Free Trade Agreement between the three countries is the subject of renegotiations

Trump said he departed the Group of Seven summit that Trudeau hosted in Quebec late last week on "very friendly" terms with his six counterparts, including the leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Britain.

The top White House economic adviser accused Canada's prime minister on Sunday of betraying Trump with "polarising" statements on us trade policy that risked undermining the American leader on the eve of a historic summit with North Korea.

The summit was seen as an opportunity to overcome disagreements on new tariffs imposed by the U.S. on imports. We agreed. We compromised on the communique.

Trudeau said he had reiterated to Trump, who left the G-7 meeting before it ended, that tariffs would harm industries and workers on both sides of the U.S.

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro followed with his insult for the ages during an interview with Fox News on Sunday.

Trump was furious after Trudeau had said at the end of a contentious economic summit in Quebec that he wouldn't let Canada be pushed around in trade relations with the United States. He also attacked Trudeau's character, calling the Liberal Party leader meek, weak and dishonest. He described Trudeau's news conference as "sophomoric" and a "political stunt".

President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the recent G7 Summit.

In his press conference, Trudeau had spoken of retaliatory measures that Canada would take next month in response to Trump's decision to slap tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. He said Canada has to stand up for itself.

His anger appears to have been sparked by a news conference Mr Trudeau gave after the summit, in which he described as "insulting" the way the USA cited national security as a reason for the tariffs.

Polestar may be its own brand now, but it will also continue to act as the performance arm of Volvo for the foreseeable future. Volvo says the Polestar Engineered tune actually improves fuel consumption and "refines the automatic gear selection".

President Donald Trump took more swipes at Canada and its prime minister over trade issues as he settled in for a summit with North Korea in Singapore, contending that "Fair Trade is now to be called Fool Trade if it is not Reciprocal".

"That's what matters", he wrote.

US President Donald Trump continued his ongoing verbal attacks on Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau early on Monday saying that "Justin acts hurt when called out!"

Global cooperation can not depend on fits of anger or little words. "President Trump made President Trump look unstable, erratic and thin-skinned".

The statement did not mention Trump by name but he could not have meant someone else.

On board Air Force One, an AFP reporter was told that Trump had approved the agreement, only to be told later of the tweets.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on Twitter Saturday sought to counter the comments about Trudeau.

The joint communique that was thrashed out over two days of negotiations vowed that members would reform multilateral oversight through the World Trade Organization (WTO) and seek to cut tariffs. We'd have a deal, we'd have a great deal with NAFTA, by now, if the Canadians would spend more time at the bargaining table and less time lobbying Capitol Hill and our press and state governments here, they are just simply not playing fair.
