House to Vote on Broad Immigration Bill Thursday, Ryan Says

Trump scraps Obama policy protecting oceans, Great Lakes

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order to end the policy of separating children of irregular migrants on the US border amid domestic and global outrage. The ruling bars the government from keeping children in detention for more than 20 days.

In a televised roundtable with members of Congress, Senators and members of his adminstration, Trump announced: "we're going to be signing an executive order. we're going to keep families together, but we still have to maintain toughness or our country is going to be overrun". He said "we want to keep families together", the New York Times reported.

The policy had led to a spike in family separations in recent weeks, with more than 2,300 minors separated from their families at the border from May 5 through June 9, according to Homeland Security. Protesters were galvanized to act after distressing photos and stories hit social media depicting children separated from their parents and sleeping in cages, crammed five in a room at repurposed Walmarts, or in so-called "tent cities" at costs reportedly exceeding what it would take to keep families together. It also authorizes up to $7 billion for family residential centers, ensuring DHS has access to funds to house more families.

America's top law official told Fox News the "zero tolerance" policy was about enforcing border security.

The move - if it retreats from his current stance that the administration is simply following the current law and needs congressional action to stop the separations - would mark a huge reversal by the President.

They both "build the wall, close legal loopholes, cancel the visa lottery, curb chain migration, and solve the border crisis and family separation issue by allowing for family detention and removal", Shah said. He and other officials had repeatedly said they had no choice but to separate families stopped at the border because of the law and a court decision.

Reyna Torres Mendivil, Mexico's consul general in San Antonio, told NPR's Audie Cornish that the process would be hampered by the US separation process, which keeps parents in ICE custody while moving children into facilities controlled by the Department of Health and Human Services.

Trump says he'll sign 'pre-emptive' order to end family separations
The moves come after the president announced Wednesday that he would sign an executive order to "keep families together". The House is expected to vote on two broad immigration bills on Thursday - a hard-line measure and a compromise bill.

President Trump's backdown comes amid growing fury over the detention of children.

But he offered no backup plan to bring an end to family separations at the border if the measure failed to pass. The administration says it wants Congress to act and we are.

When kids are taken away to be processed through the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement, parents are given a flyer with information on how to locate their children, immigration attorney Jacqueline Watson said.

Although Trump's crackdown is aimed at deterring irregular migration to the USA, the North American country has witnessed has witnessed a surge since October, with many migrants fleeing violence and extreme poverty in Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.

Although it's nearly certainly a coincidence, within minutes of this Facebook post, President Trump came before the American media to announce that he would be signing an executive order, which will halt the separation of families who are in detention along our southern border. "If other things happen, we'll cross those bridges when we get to it".

House homeland security committee chairman Michael McCaul said the president "is a thousand percent" behind the new bill, adding that families will not be separated if the bill passes. About two dozen House members went to the White House for a meeting on the bill.
