Flight attendants get more uterine, thyroid and other cancers

Flight Attendants Have Higher Rates of Many Cancers Study Says

"This study is the first to show higher prevalences of all cancers studied, and significantly higher prevalences of non-melanoma skin cancer compared to a similarly matched USA sample population", said lead study author Eileen McNeely of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston. As a group, they get certain cancers more than the general population, according to a new study. The flight attendants answered questions about their flight schedules, as well as any diagnoses of cancer. Data showed a higher prevalence of breast, uterine, thyroid, gastrointestinal and cervical cancers among cabin crew members.

"This is striking given the low rates of being overweight and smoking in this occupational group".

Other studies have linked shift work and disrupted circadian clocks to higher risk of breast and prostate cancers, possibly due to a reduced ability of DNA to fix itself and the way circadian rhythm processes may be connected to immune function.

Male flight attendants were found to have higher rates of skin cancer 1.2 and 3.2 percent for melanoma and non-melanoma cancer, respectively, compared to 0.69 and 2.9 per cent for the adult population as a whole.

This was especially the case if they were exposed to high levels of occupational secondhand smoke before the introduction of smoking bans in 1998. The association also noted that the USA federal government now does not require airlines to educate cabin crews about onboard radiation exposure, or to offer additional protections from radiation-including for pregnant flight attendants.

The AS Roma centre-back is expected to make a difference against Nigeria and their quick attackers, primarily to keep Ahmed Musa quiet.

People who work on USA flight crews have higher rates of certain types of cancer, according to a new study out of Harvard. And yet, for the attendants themselves, the job is particularly risky when considering the cancer risks. The authors couldn't link cosmic radiation or circadian rhythm disruptions to breast cancer because they couldn't isolate these two factors.

"Having fewer children and having children later in life are known risk factors for breast cancer", Pinkerton, who wasn't involved in the current study, said by email.

The Harvard University scientists behind the work came to their conclusion by examining data from more than 5,300 US-based flight attendants who filled out an online survey between December 2014 and June 2015 as part of the larger "Harvard Flight Attendant Health Study".

Flight attendants also have disrupted sleep schedules, since they frequently cross time zones and aren't able to maintain a regular circadian wake-sleep cycle. On average, attendants were 51 years old and had been working in the profession for just over 20 years. In general, though, airplane cabin crews are exposed more regularly to ultra-violet cosmic radiation than the average person-at higher altitudes, cosmic radiation goes through less atmospheric filtering.

Unions for flight attendants at Southwest and American airlines identified crew fatigue as a top health issue that needs to be addressed, something the pending FAA reauthorization bill could do with required minimum rest times.
