North Korea said to scheme to keep nukes

AP #4161437/1 "Well, what our experts have devised is a program that with North Korean cooperation, with full disclosure of all of their chemical and biological nuclear programs, ballistic missile sites We can get, physically, we would be able to dismantle the overwhelming bulk of their programs within a year". Either Kim Jong-un deceived President Trump or Kim does not control the military in North Korea.

Pompeo told reporters the day after the Singapore summit on 12 June that Washington hoped to achieve "major disarmament" by North Korea within Trump's current term, which ends on 20 January 2021.

USA intelligence officials, citing newly obtained evidence, have concluded that North Korea does not intend to fully surrender its nuclear stockpile, and instead is considering ways to hide the number of weapons it has and secret production facilities, according to US officials.

Trump said he would be ending joint military exercises between the USA and South Korea.

"There is absolutely unequivocal evidence that they are trying to deceive the United States", the official said, despite Pyongyang's recent curtailment of missile and nuclear tests.

The joint statement, however, gave no details on how and when Pyongyang would relinquish its weapons.

Bruce Klingner, a former Central Intelligence Agency analyst, said, "The observed activity appears inconsistent with a North Korean intent to abandon its nuclear weapons programs". "Secondly, they likely targeted (Trump), asking if he was deceived by North Korea because no progress has been reported in the three weeks after the summit".

"North Korea has a long history of cheating on agreements that it's made with previous administrations", she said in an interview with CNN's "State of the Union". "If they have the strategic decision already made to do that, and they're cooperative, we can move very quickly".

Pompeo's visit to Pyongyang will be followed by a stop in Tokyo, where he is expected to meet with his South Korean and Japanese counterparts.

US National Security Adviser John Bolton speaks during a press conference in Moscow, on June 27, 2018.

Mr Bolton, who has expressed hard-line views on North Korea, said if Pyongyang has chose to give up its nuclear weapons program and is cooperative, then "we can move very quickly" and they can win sanctions relief and aid from South Korea and Japan.

According to the State Department, senior USA diplomat Sung Kim, who held negotiations with North Korean officials before the Singapore summit, also travelled to a Korean border village on Sunday to restart talks with the North.

China and the USA both hope to see the Korean peninsula free of nuclear weapons. It did, however, note that Pompeo and "relevant high-level" North officials will hold follow-up negotiations "at the earliest possible date" to see through the outcomes of the summit.

The lone weapons facility that has been acknowledged by North Korea is in Yongbyon, 60 miles north of Pyongyang.

"There was a buzz when I shared a glass of soju and talked with Ri Myong Hun in 2003", Hur said. "I think the president would want to pursue it".
