Baltimore: hospital evacuated due to tuberculosis threat

One among the most fatal diseases of the world, Tuberculosis, made an appearance in the Johns Hopkins Hospital at Baltimore in Maryland on Thursday.

Cancer research buildings at Johns Hopkins University Medical Center are cleared from the threat of exposure to tuberculosis, the hospital said in a statement Thursday afternoon, hours after fire and rescue teams responded to a possible contamination and evacuated the area.

"There was a small tube that contained a frozen sample, and it was dropped and the lid came off while the sample was still frozen inside", said Dr. Landon King, executive vice dean of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

This is an ongoing investigation.

Formed in the Atlantic tropical storm "beryl"
Tropical storm-force winds by Saturday morning extended up to 35 miles from the storm's center . Maximum sustained winds are near 35 miles per hour (55 kph) with higher gusts.

"Although we believe that this was a one-time event with no risk to anyone on campus, we take this event seriously and will conduct a thorough review of existing procedures, retrain staff and make any other needed improvements", Willis said.

Fire crews are on the scene at Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltimore after reports that people may have been exposed to tuberculosis when vials there were broken.

"We have determined there is no risk involved". Because of its knack for picking on the immunocompromised, TB is much more risky and occasionally fatal for people who also have HIV. The AIDS-causing HIV virus weakens the immune system that it is unable to fight the tuberculosis bacteria, according to Mayo Clinic. Airborne germs spread the disease from person to person. The bacteria affect the lungs, which can lead to chest pain, fatigue, fever, prolonged coughing or coughing up blood, night sweats, and loss of appetite. The same year, around 10.6 million people were infected with the disease across the globe with the disease and around 1.7 million died due to it. However, in the United States, the disease is gradually becoming rare.
