Graham blames China for North Korea's condemnation of U.S. talks

Pompeo meets with North Korea's former spy chief on nuclear weapons to build 'trust'

North Korea has said that high-level talks with a USA delegation led by Mike Pompeo were regrettable and accused Washington of trying to unilaterally pressurise the country into abandoning its nuclear weapons.

Speaking at a news conference in Tokyo with his Japanese and South Korean Pompeo responded directly to North Korea's Foreign Ministry's comment, after his two-day trip to Pyongyang, that the US employed a "unilateral and gangster-like demand for denuclearization".

"The U.S. -N.K. talks held in Pyongyang this time marked the first step in a journey towards denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula", Kim Eui-keum, a presidential spokesman, told reporters Sunday. "Some places a great deal of progress, other places there's still more work to be done", he said.

"It seems that those who are negotiating are losing sight of this important thing, which is would this process benefit at the end the people living in North Korea", said Tomas Ojea Quintana, the United Nations' Special Rapporteur on human rights in the North.

It said the outcome of the follow-up talks was very concerning because it had led to a "dangerous phase that might rattle our willingness for denuclearisation that had been firm".

"The United States has been clear on what we seek from North Korea.", Pompeo said in Hanoi. "This began when the USA - the United States and Vietnam began working together to repatriate the remains of American service members lost in Vietnam", he said.

'Our expectations and hopes were so naive it could be called foolish'.

Pompeo shrugged off the statement Sunday following separate meetings with the foreign ministers of Japan and South Korea - although he didn't disagree with the nature of the U.S.'s "gangster-like" requests. The statement called for a series of simultaneous actions from both sides, including exchanges to improve relations, the dismantling of a North Korean missile-engine testing ground and talks to return the remains of American soldiers killed in the Korean War.

And while both sides are still at the very tentative stages of trust-building, he said: "It's going to take time, but eventually we can not just keep on going this way because we will end up going nowhere".

North Korea's statement bashed hopes for a quick deal and is sure to fuel growing skepticism in the USA over how serious Kim is about giving up his nuclear arsenal.

The US politician did not meet with North Korea's leader during this visit.

Pompeo was speaking at a business event in Hanoi, Vietnam, after completing a two-day trip to Pyongyang where he met with North Korean officials to discuss the details of a summit agreement between US President Donald Trump and Kim.

In the days following his historic 12 June summit with Kim Jong-un in Singapore, Trump had announced that the return of the remains and the destruction of the missile facility had been completed or were in progress.

"We now have a meeting set up for 12 July".

The countries did agree this weekend to set up a working group to iron out further disagreements and to meet Thursday to discuss recovering the remains of United States military personnel killed during the Korean War.

Less than a month after President Donald Trump talked about opening "a new chapter" between the U.S. and North Korea, the relationship between the two nations has taken a tense and hostile, but predictable turn.

It fell to U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to get the talks going last week.

"The North has never seen denuclearization in a vacuum, but as part of a larger package and something that's considered only after there is a peace regime", said Kim.

As they began their talks on Saturday, Kim Yong Chol alluded to the fact that Pompeo and his delegation had stayed overnight in Pyongyang.
