Hartley's auto suffered a left front suspension failure as he approached a corner on one of the fastest parts of the track, causing him to spin across the tarmac runoff and slam into the wall.

The front left wheel of his auto lifted and skewed vertically as the suspension collapsed and he was left without control of the machine as it spun backwards heavily into the barriers.

Raikkonen and Hamilton spent the remainder of the session swapping times at the top of the order, but a 1m26.722s from Hamilton in the closing stages of the session put the Brit just out of reach.

Hamilton, victor for the past four years at Silverstone and five times in total, topped the timesheets with a lap of one minute 26.722 seconds.

The session resumed after a 13-minute stoppage.

Hartley's wheel was pushed upwards and his STR13 skated across the gravel and caught some air before he slammed into the barriers on the outside of the corner.

Hamilton hopes to pull away in Austria
While both Red Bulls and Ferraris went to their boxes to have their tires changed, Mercedes surprisingly let Hamilton driving on. Mercedes' chief strategist will keep his job after a serious blunder during the Austrian grand prix .

Toro Rosso now faces a race against time to fix Hartley's vehicle in time for qualifying, with just a two-hour gap between the end of the final practice session and the start of Q1.

Hartley emerged uninjured, but his vehicle was unable to be rebuilt in time for qualifying, forcing him to back of the grid for the Grand Prix on Sunday (Monday NZ time).

Luckily, the 28-year-old was able to walk away from the wreckage and gave fans a wave on his way to receive medical attention.

A Toro Rosso spokesperson told Formula1.com the team completed a full front suspension change on Gasly's vehicle ahead of the one-hour session that will decide Sunday's grid.

Force India's Esteban Ocon and Sergio Perez finished just outside the top 10 in 11th and 12th, ahead of Fernando Alonso, Nico Hulkenberg, and Carlos Sainz.

Gasly's early time, prior to Hartley's failure, left him 19th on the leaderboard.
