Nirbhaya case: Rapists to hang as SC dismisses review pleas

Nirbhaya's mother and father protest

Challenging the Supreme Court's verdict, Mukesh had a year ago filed a review petition alleging that the court had not properly examined crucial evidence in the case.

The brutal attack prompted widespread protests throughout the country, sparked a new debate about women's safety in India and resulted in strict changes to the country's rape laws which now allows for the death penalty in some rape cases.

Akshay Kumar Singh, 31, Mukesh, 29, Vinay Sharma, 23 and Pawan, 22, four of the six men who raped a 23-year-old paramedic student, have appealed against the death penalty that was awarded to them.

AP Singh, the lawyer for the convicts told ANI, "The sentence was upheld due to public and political pressure".

A Special Bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra and Justices R. Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan rejected the condemned convicts' plea for a relook into their case on the ground that they were not properly represented by lawyers during the trial and vital pieces of evidence in their favour was not brought before the court. The only other legal option for the four is through a mercy petition to the President of India.

One of the accused in the case, Ram Singh, had allegedly committed suicide in the Tihar Jail.

In the years since, women's advocates say that the Nirbhaya case raised awareness, prompting more women to come forward if they're abused or assaulted, with authorities responding to the concerns with more closed-circuit security cameras and fast track courts for crimes against women. The sixth member was tried as a minor and sentenced to time in a correctional facility, while the four adults were sentenced to death in 2013, a ruling confirmed in 2014 by the Delhi high court. The victim succumbed to her injuries two weeks later at a hospital in Singapore.

The case led to the amendment of the Criminal Procedure Code to make rape punishable with the death penalty.

A juvenile, who was among the accused, was convicted by a juvenile justice board. He walked out of a correction home in December 2015 after spending three years there.
