Political head butting: Prime Minister and Ontario Premier meet

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Premier Rob Ford on Thursday

Just a week after Doug Ford took office, the rift between his new Tory government and Justin Trudeau's federal Liberals appears to be growing as they verbally spar over funding for refugees and asylum seekers in the province.

Press Secretary to the Prime Minister of Ontario Doug Ford said Thursday, July 5, that the Federal government has pushed people to the illegal penetration in Canada and continues to encourage those passing through the border between the USA and Quebec, arriving in Ontario.

The federal government recently pledged to give Ontario, Quebec and Manitoba $50 million to help offset some of the costs incurred due to the influx of asylum seekers illegally crossing the Canada-U.S. border. "This mess was 100% the result of the Federal Government".

"If he wants to welcome them in, that's fine, but he should make sure he's paying for them and compensating the municipalities as well as the provincial government".

"During a photo-op prior to his meeting with Tory, Trudeau thanked the mayor for his leadership on the resettlement of asylum seekers and promised to ensure that the federal government is "a good, strong and present" partner" in those efforts.

While Ontario has not backed out of any immigration deals with Ottawa, it's not prepared to assume any more expenses on this file, she said.

"The premier and I talked directly about the fact that we have very clear mandates from the people who elected us", he said.

Quebec alone estimates their cost at about $146 million because they rightly include ongoing costs for housing and settlement, yet they're only in line for about $36 million.

The province has already committed $3 million to the Red Cross and offered up the 800 spaces that these people now occupy in college dorms, which students will need come next month. The number of refugees and asylum claimants using the city's shelter system went from 459 in 2016 to 3,209 as of last month, according to a city report.

Tory has said that the cost of providing shelter and social supports to the refugee claimants will reach $64.5 million by the end of 2018 and has called on Ottawa to reimburse the city for that money.

Earlier, federal Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen told Metro Morning that he is concerned about the pressure an influx of refugees is putting on Toronto.

Toronto is now housing some 800 migrants, including 200 children in dormitories at two Toronto colleges - a temporary solution that will end in August when students return to school.

The province has already committed $3 million to the Red Cross and offered up the 800 spaces that these people now occupy in college dorms, she said.

Ontario's former Liberal government signed an immigration agreement with Ottawa in November of previous year. "We are ready to recreate this model in Ontario, and we need the collaboration of the provincial government".

Meanwhile, some of those tasked with helping to house the newcomers say the disagreement between Ottawa and Ontario over the issue has left them in limbo.
