Israeli closure of sole commercial crossing deepens suffering of Gazans

Palestinian Hamas militants attend a military drill in preparation to any upcoming confrontation wit

Israel will shut down the Gaza Strip's main trade terminal in a new crackdown on the region.

Israel also said it was ending a seasonal expansion of the fishing zone off Gaza, returning it to six nautical miles instead of nine.

However, Israeli officials have been outraged by some demonstrators' use of incendiary kites and balloons, which they fly over the separation fence into Israel, claiming that the kites have sparked fires damaging some 7,000 acres of farmlands and forests.

People taking part in more than three months of protests at the Gaza border have started scores of fires by sending the balloons and kites into Israel, vexing its advanced military which is used to dealing with more conventional weapons.

A picture taken on May 29, 2018 shows fishing boats carrying a group of Palestinian activists who are protesting Israel's naval blockade on Gaza, setting to sail from Gaza City harbor.

The closure of the Karam Abu Salem border crossing will also affect Gaza's exports, further straining an already crippled economy brought to its knees by the 12-year blockade.

"The Israeli side officially informed us that the shipment of goods and all kinds of products are banned except for food, medical aid, wheat, livestock and fuel", said Fattouh.

"The latest retaliatory measure by Israel made no mention to the fishing limit in Gaza, but we expect to hear from them on Tuesday", he said.

Proud of England’s performance at the World Cup 2018, says Wayne Rooney
England have reached the final only once, back in the year 1966, when they lifted the trophy beating West Germany 4-2. The Croats hadn't advanced to the semifinals at the World Cup since 1998, when the country made its first appearance.

"There will be additional steps which I won't detail", he added.

"Hamas calls on the global community to intervene immediately to prevent this crime", Hamas spokesman Fawzy Barhoum said in a statement.

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has been watching Gaza closely as it seeks to improve humanitarian conditions while sidelining Hamas, which is blacklisted as a terrorist group in the West.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum called the move "a new crime against humanity" and called on the global community to intervene.

Palestinians see the strategy as a way of inflicting economic damage on Israel in protest without risking their lives by approaching the border fence.

No Israelis have been killed. The blockade, which is also enforced by Egypt, has been deemed legal by the United Nations and other worldwide bodies, though it remains hotly contested by many human rights groups.

United Nations officials and rights activists have repeatedly called for Israel to lift the blockade against Gaza, citing deteriorating humanitarian conditions.
