US threatened nations over breastfeeding resolution

US turned to threats to fight breast-feeding resolution report

The New York Times alleges the USA attempted to browbeat others countries into dropping the resolution.

Unfortunately, it seems that the United States had formula manufacturers' interests in mind during the Geneva talks.

Our commander-in-tweet could feel the outrage building, so he got mad online in return.

"Malnutrition and poverty are the precise settings where you absolutely do need to breastfeed, because that's the setting where access to safe and clean water for reconstituting powdered formula is often impossible to find", Dr. Michele Barry, director of the Center for Innovation in Global Health in the Stanford School of Medicine, told The New York Times in response to Trump's tweet.

The New York Times said the US was "embracing the interests of infant formula manufacturers" and even threatened Ecuador and other countries with financial retaliation.

"With respect to news published in the United States on this date, the Public Ministry reiterates that Ecuador maintains its public policy of promoting and protecting breastfeeding without variation as the exclusive food for newborns up to 6 months", a statement by the Ecuadorean health ministry said Monday reacting to the report and denying backing off from the resolution under USA pressure. And, experts said after the president's remarks, low-income and impoverished areas are where breastfeeding can make the biggest improvements.

The Americans did not threaten Moscow as they did Ecuador and other countries, according to the Times.

Although formula feeding is a great option for mothers who can't breastfeed, current medical literature strongly supports breastfeeding for mothers and babies.

For their part, the USA delegates have said that it wasn't corporations' best interests they had in mind, but that they were instead trying to fight against "stigmatizing" women who choose to formula feed.

China vows to 'fight back' after USA threaten $200bn tariffs on goods
Earlier this year, Trump imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum, as well as products such as solar panels and washing machines . Stocks in China and the rest of Asia tumbled overnight, spreading to Europe after markets opened .

A 2016 study by The Lancet, one of the world's most prestigious medical journals, found breastfeeding could prevent 80,000 child deaths a year globally.

Where does the US stand?

When contacted for a comment, the Department of Health and Human Services said the US stance was in support of mothers who can not breast-feed for various reasons.

The resolution was eventually passed, but only after the Russian government reintroduced the measure.

The State Department would not answer the Times' questions. "They should be equally supported with information and access to alternatives for the health of themselves and their babies". Utah reported the highest breastfeeding rate - 94 percent - while just over half of MS mothers said they had tried to breastfeed their children.

But in the USA, disparities in race, income and geography underscore the work that's left to do to support US mothers who want to give their infants breastmilk.

A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services said to CNN, "The issues being debated were not about whether one supports breastfeeding".

Despite all that data, the USA has consistently lagged behind most high-income countries on both breastfeeding rates (only about half of American women are still breastfeeding at six months, as is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics) and the policies that help increase them, like paid maternity leave.

Companies that sell baby formula generate $70billion annually, but those sales have been stagnant due to the increased popularity of breastfeeding.
