Conservative rebels target Theresa May's Brexit plan

Their resignations came after May chaired the first meeting of her new cabinet following the departure of Boris Johnson and David Davis.

Brexit-supporting lawmakers were angered by the proposals, saying they would keep Britain tethered to the bloc and unable to change its rules to strike new trade deals around the world.

Senior Tory backbencher Sir Bernard Jenkin said: "These four amendments reflect existing Government policy, and we hope they will be welcomed by the Government". These firms would, of course, favour a "soft Brexit" as that will ensure continued access to the single market comprising the remaining 27 European Union states, and some have put expansion plans on hold until there is greater clarity on Britain's exit by March 2019.

Johnson resigned as the foreign minister, warning that Britain will end up like a colony to the European Union after the government announced plans for a close trading relationship with the bloc after Brexit next year. The cold realities of business opportunities, and not historic nostalgia, will decide India's future engagements with the UK.

The electorate is totally confused because May has deviated from the message of the 2017 referendum with her soft Brexit landing that she expects to use to placate Michael Barnier, the chief European Union negotiator. Her plan splits the difference between a stripped-down free-trade deal and the so-called Norway option of full single-market membership.

Britain is now part of the EU's single market - which allows for the frictionless flow of goods and services among the 28 member states - and its tariff-free customs union for goods.

Boris's resignation letter is scathing.

He added: "The high levels of demand continued until around 4.30am before returning to levels that we would normally have expected to see".

"This is the right approach - for both the United Kingdom and for the EU".

Appearing in the House of Commons just minutes later, a confident-sounding May defended her Brexit plan.

Johnson sent an incendiary resignation letter on Monday accusing May of killing "the Brexit dream" and flying "white flags" of surrender in negotiations with the EU.

"It needs to be about the actual countries, with elected governments that need to get prosperity and jobs and trade if those politicians want to get re-elected", he said.

"We need to see whether the taskforce can accommodate some of the British thinking", he said.

And while Britain will no longer fall under the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice - a longtime bugbear of Brexit supporters - British courts will "pay due regard" to European court case law in relevant cases. Steve Baker also resigned as a junior Brexit minister.

Under her proposal, a treaty would be signed committing the UK to "continued harmonisation" with EU rules - avoiding friction at the UK-EU border, including Northern Ireland.

"If anyone in the Conservative Party is then thinking about voting that down, that is the point at which they are going to endanger everything they have been trying to achieve".
