Bangladesh students protest over road safety after deadly crash

More than 100 students hurt during violent standoffs with police in Bangladesh, hospital says - but police deny anything happened

Police use batons and tear-gas canisters to disperse the crowds.

Activists say at least four people have been injured.

Local media reported that political activists belonging to the governing party beat students marching towards their offices.

Later, the students claimed that the miscreants were members from Bangladesh Chhatra League's (BCL) Tejgaon College unit, according to The Dhaka Tribune.

The US ambassador condemned the violence.

The rights group also criticized the arrest of Shahidul Alam, a renowned photographer and activist, on charges of spreading false information about the protests and propaganda against the government under an information technology law.

Amnesty International called for Alam's immediate release, with Deputy South Asia Director Omar Waraich saying in a statement that the arrest "marks a unsafe escalation of a crackdown by the government".

How has the governing party responded?

With reports of an internet shut-down throughout parts of the capital in an attempt to stop protesters from coordinating action against one another, there have been further accusations of loyalists to the governing Awami League party attacking protesters.

In response to the unrest, the Government launched a week-long drive to check vehicle certificates in a bid to improve traffic safety, but said it would not tolerate more disruption by the protesters.

Many powerful ministers have requested the students to go back to their classes as the unique teen protests could turn into an extended anti-government protest before elections which are due later this year.

The Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) chairman-Jahirul Haq said that they got the verdict from the government, however, he did not provide any detail that what was the government's order. Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal spoke on the government's behalf this week, saying "all the demands raised by the agitating students are logical, and the process to implement those demands is underway". "We have a limit of patience but it does not mean that we will tolerate anarchy".

"Yet again, Bangladesh authorities seem determined to take abusive shortcuts to problems, and then denounce those who criticize", Adams said.

How have the protests unfolded?

Thousands of students and adults have been out on Dhaka's roads stopping traffic and checking vehicles over the last one week after a speeding bus killed two students.

Thousands of other students took to the streets elsewhere in Dhaka on Saturday, but no major violence was reported.

They have ignored repeated calls from the government for them to return home.

The BCL were also blamed for attacks on journalists - including the destruction of phones and cameras - which the Daily Star newspaper called a "reprehensible violation" of press freedom.

Activists have also taken to social media in droves to call on local and worldwide media organisations to cover the story.
