Saudi rules out mediation in Canada row, mulls new measures

Saudi Arabia-Canada spat hits 16,000 students as the Kingdom suspends scholarships

The Canadian embassy in Riyadh called on the Saudi authorities in a tweet post to release a number of civil society activists, which Saudi Arabia considered an interference in its internal affairs.

Thomas Juneau, an assistant professor at the University of Ottawa's Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, estimated the overall trade relationship between Canada and Saudi Arabia totals between $3 and $4 billion a year.

In an indication that the quarrel may worsen, Jubeir said that the kingdom was still "considering additional measures" against Canada, but did not elaborate.

According to Bloomberg, Saudi Arabia has invested about $6 billion into Canada since 2006.

The execution came during a deepening dispute between the two countries sparked by Canadian criticism of how Saudi Arabia is treating jailed activists.

Saudi Arabia's quick and severe response is worth noting.

"The crisis with Canada was imposed on us", the foreign minister added.

China's July exports rise more than expected despite US tariffs
A spokesman for the commerce ministry described the latest round of USA tariffs as "very unreasonable". It represents the latest salvo in the ever-expanding trade war between the USA and China.

Responding to a question about the reason for the arrest of the activists, Jubeir repeated earlier allegations that they had been in touch with foreign entities.

All Saudi Arabian students now studying in Canada will be transferred to other countries.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry called Canada's criticism of the arrest "blatant interference in the kingdom's domestic affairs, against basic global norms and all worldwide protocols", and an "unacceptable affront" to its "laws and judicial process".

A source at a Saudi bank told Reuters the bank was contacted by the central bank on Wednesday afternoon asking for information about all their Canadian exposure - investments in Canada and foreign exchange positions. The selling began on Tuesday, it said.

Other sanctions include Saudi patients in Canada having their treatments stopped and being relocated to a medical facility outside the country. Saudia Airlines has also announced it will suspend flights to and from Canada starting August 13.

The Kingdom has recalled its ambassador, while at the same time expelling Canada's top diplomat in the country.

Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to hold a news conference in Montreal.
