On Sunday, June 6, Indonesia was struck by an quake of 7.0 magnitude that has killed more than 90 people and damaged thousands of buildings.

Terrified holidaymakers rushed for boats and planes to leave Indonesia's Lombok island on Tuesday after it suffered a second deadly quake within a week, while rescuers struggled to reach hard-hit areas where survivors are in urgent need of food and shelter.

Indonesia's disaster agency says the death toll from the quake that shook Lombok island Sunday evening has risen to 131.

Nugroho told a news conference damage was "massive" in the north of Lombok.

"I imagine things will be pretty desperate and I don't expect things to improve before next year", said Singleton. Thousands of homes and buildings were damaged and those displaced camped wherever they could - in sports fields and on roadsides, cobbling together ramshackle shelters and building campfires for warmth.

But the rescuers and heavy equipment were, "very much needed elsewhere, so we chose to shift the operation" to other locations, Mr Supartana said.

"They do not have a water supply and not enough food", Tasman told AFP, after visiting Karang Bajo village in the island's north.

There was no official figure for how many tourists were on the islands, with numbers jumping from an original estimate of about 1,000.

Among other major buildings to collapse were a health clinic, government offices and other public facilities, he added.

The mother-of-two said they were able to find accommodation in Bali and now have to rethink their travel plans after losing many of their possessions when they fled the quake.

Sarah and Adam, who are in their early 20s, had been staying on the Gili Islands before moving to Canggu in Bali - and it was there that they felt the earth tremble.

"We will tear down our houses, they are too damaged to fix, we will rebuild with plywood and timber, it is safer, cheaper and warmer".

Rescuers dug through the rubble of a mosque on Wednesday where an unknown number of people were suspected buried.

Salama, 52, was at a prayer class in the Karangpangsor village mosque when the quake struck.

Officials said more than 2,000 people had been evacuated from the three Gili islands off the northwest coast of Lombok, where fears of a tsunami had spread soon after the quake.

An Indonesian man examines the remains of houses, after a 6.4 magnitude natural disaster struck, in Lombok on 29 July, 2018. Among the many buildings destroyed on Lombok were two homes which housed around 80 underprivileged children. "Hopefully, now, with the arrival of heavy equipment, we can get her remains back".

The Bali and Lombok airports have stayed open.

Lombok, which is located east of Bali and makes up part of the Lesser Sunda Island chain, is a popular tourist destination known for mountains, beaches and surf.

Lombok had already been hit by a 6.4-magnitude natural disaster on July 29 that killed 17 people. Hotels and other buildings in both locations are not allowed to exceed the height of coconut trees.
