Guardian: Russian Spy Found Working at US Embassy in Moscow

Suspected Russian spy found working at US embassy in Moscow: report

USA counter-intelligence investigators discovered a suspected Russian spy had been working undetected in the heart of the American embassy in Moscow for more than a decade, the Guardian has learned.

"She had access to the internal network of the Embassy, email and databases, including the working schedules of the presidents, Vice-presidents of the United States of America and their wives, and came to the attention of American special services for their regular informal meetings with the FSB", says the source.

The Secret Service has dismissed the report that a Russian employee at the US Moscow embassy, who was reportedly fired after her contacts with the Russian intelligence came to light, had access to secret data.

The State Department alerted the Secret Service, a branch of the Homeland Security Department, in January 2017 and revoked her security clearance in the summer of that year. The dismissal came shortly before a round of expulsions of US personnel demanded by the Kremlin after Washington imposed more sanctions on the country.

"The Secret Service is trying to hide the breach by firing [her]", the source told the paper.

"We knew it was happening and it was just a process of playing it out and giving her specific information that we saw her give back to the FSB". 'The damage was already done but the senior management of the Secret Service did not conduct any internal investigation to assess the damage and to see if [she] recruited any other employees to provide her with more information.

Meanwhile, Chinese state TV said: "The White House's extreme pressure and blackmail are already clear to the worldwide community". In July, China slapped duties on American shipments of soybeans, cotton, pork, corn, wheat and other items.

In addition, she had access to the Embassy and security services.

"She did not have access to highly classified information", the official said.

"On Thursday, August 2, 2018, The Guardian published an article by Nick Hopkins entitled, Exclusive: "Suspected Russian Spy Found Working at US Embassy in Moscow.' The article is wrought with irresponsible and inaccurate reporting based on the claims of 'anonymous" sources", according to the statement from the US Secret Service.

The State Department refused to provide comment on the "personnel matters" adding that if it finds out that an employee has been in breach of security guidelines, it takes "appropriate action in appropriate time".

"This is of particular emphasis in Russian Federation", the agency added.

All non-American workers are vetted and employed by the State Department before being assigned work by different agencies. As a result, the duties are limited to translation, interpretation, cultural guidance and administrative support.
