Hiroshima marks 73rd anniversary of atomic bombing in WWII

The skies over Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park were clear, just as they were on Aug 6, 1945, when an American B-29 bomber dropped its deadly payload on the port city dotted with military installations, ultimately killing 140,000 people.

On Aug. 6, 1945, the USA dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima, Japan, killing an estimated 140,000 people. He said Japan is committed to the 3 principles of not producing, possessing or allowing nuclear arms on its territory.

Three days later, a second U.S. atomic bomb killed 70,000 people in Nagasaki. The global representation was the third largest on record.

"Themes will key on current concerns about the potential use of nuclear weapons, the status of safeguards and monitors on the inventory of such weapons around the world, (including in the U.S.) and re-exploring the long memory about the awful loss of life caused by two nuclear bombs dropped on two different Japanese cities within days of each other", according to a news release from the Arkansas Coalition for Peace and Justice. U.S. Ambassador to Japan William F. Hagerty IV made his first appearance at the ceremony since he was sworn in for the current post in July of a year ago.

For years, Japan has relied on US deterrence and did not sign the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons that referred to the suffering of hibakusha, or atomic bomb survivors.

Japan should take a more constructive role to achieve a nuclear-free world, he said, urging Tokyo to help the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons take effect.

The anniversary comes amid hopes to denuclearise North Korea after President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un made vague aspirational statements of denuclearising the peninsula when they met in Singapore in June.

Without naming specific nations, Matsui warned that "certain countries are explicitly expressing self-centered nationalism and modernizing their nuclear arsenals".

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Abe said in his speech, "It is the duty of Japan, as the only country to have been hit with atomic bombs in wartime, to work tirelessly in pursuit of a world without nuclear weapons".

"The important thing now is to patiently continue efforts to gain cooperation from both nuclear and nonnuclear states and take practical steps", Abe said, highlighting the importance of pursuing nuclear disarmament through the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, or NPT.
