NCAA To Allow 'Elite' Prospects To Hire Agents

What the new NCAA rules mean for college basketball

The current rule only permits players to maintain eligibility if they withdraw from the draft 10 days after the National Basketball Association combine, while those who take part in the combine and go undrafted are left with the G League or the prospect of playing overseas. Under the proposed rule change, they would have to declare their intent by 5 p.m. the Monday following the NBA Draft.

The NBA and USA Basketball's compliance with the rules is crucial since the NCAA now expects them to change their course of action.

Included in the announcement was a radical change allowing top high school and college players to hire agents while remaining eligible for college play.

Check back for updates on this developing story.

While this will be irrelevant for players like Zion Williamson, Nassir Little, Shareef O'Neal, and Romeo Langford, who have already committed to schools - others high school prospects can soon hire agents in hopes to a swift move to the NBA Draft. Athletes returning to school would have to demonstrate need for assistance.

Category 4 Hurricane Hector likely to miss Hawaii
On Friday, state officials warned residents and visitors to take precautions in case Hector gets closer to the island chain. CNN meteorologist Haley Brink said it was too early to tell if the hurricane would trigger an eruption of Kilauea.

In repsonse to the recommendations issued in April from the Commission on College Basketball, the NCAA's Board of Governors and Division I Board of Directors are implementing changes to provide student-athletes more freedom and flexibilty to decide about going pro and minimize the leverage of outside influences on high school recruits and college athletes.

In addition, agents certified by the NCAA would be able pay for meals and certain other expenses.

Most of the changes take effect beginning this school year.

If coaches and staff are making any money off an outside company - like an "apparel company" - they will have to report that to their schools, too. The new rules also allow for heavier punishments, like longer head coach suspensions and stronger fines.
